Players of SimCity may be getting the ability to mod their games in an upcoming patch. Speaking to IncGamers, Maxis' Kip Katsarelis confirmed that the studio was watching the community and looking for possible ways to tackle modding.
According to Katsarelis, the studio isn't against modding in general, and that they've even brought in some members of the modding community before the game's launch and have been actively pursuing leads on how to implement user-developed buildings and other forms of modifications.
“From a development perspective, we’re not anti-mod," said Katsarelis. "We’ve actually brought in some of our modding community before launch. We’ve talked to the modding community for both SimCity and the Sims, so it’s one of those things that, we need to get the core product out the door.”
Katsarelis said that the studio is looking to implement a system similar to Valve's Steamworks for its modding support. He added that Maxis was looking at what Valve was doing with its system and that "these things take time."
“Yesterday I saw that someone has already decomposed some of our texture systems and re-textured some of the buses. We’re watching that stuff which is cool. We’re just not in a position right now to talk about modding in any real way just yet. We want to get the game solid and we’ll move forward from there.”
