We all know that a new 3D Mario game is making its way to Nintendo’s Wii U. Other notable franchises like Super Smash Bros. and The Legend of Zelda are also in the works, even if we haven’t seen any indication of what they look like. However, one major player has been absent for quite some time. Retro Studios, the company behind the revered Metroid Prime franchise and the colorful Donkey Kong Country Returns, has been working on something in the veil of shadow, but it seems like a reveal is imminent.
Nintendo supervisor Hiro Yamada recently spoke with Official Nintendo Magazine about Donkey Kong Country Returns 3D, which will be arriving on the Nintendo 3DS May 24. But, Retro isn’t making that game. So, like good members of the media, ONM broached the topic of the popular studios’ next game.
"I wonder what kind of game it is? I hope to introduce it to you in the not so distant future," Yamada said.
Now, that isn’t as good as, “why, let me tell you what it is right now!” But, knowing that we’re at least close to hearing about the next big thing from Retro is better than nothing. With no big E3 press conference coming from Nintendo this year, it’s likely that one of the Nintendo Directs released during the show will introduce the fresh product.
Whether the game is a new entry in the Metroid franchise or something entirely different, many eyes will be on Retro during this difficult financial time for Nintendo.
