Sony has announced today that come 2015 we'll be able to watch a Ratchet & Clank movie. Apparently, fans have been asking for such a thing for years, and Insomniac Games has been nursing the idea for a long time too. It makes a lot of sense; the Ratchet & Clank games are full of humour and action, both of which should make for enjoyable movies. If the end product is like an extended version of the cut scenes that feature in the games, fans should be happy.
That said, films based on video games haven't always worked out well. Luckily, Insomniac seems determined to work closely with the creators on this one:
“Insomniac is honored to play a hands-on role with the film’s production, screenplay, character development, and animation consulting. Furthermore, our own Ratchet & Clank writer, T.J. Fixman, who has written all of the recent Ratchet & Clank games, is writing the script for the film as well.”
The writer news is particularly reassuring, given that the alternative would likely be hiring a movie writer with no history with the story and characters of the series.
This far ahead of the suggested release, there's no actual footage of the film, but there's a teaser featuring Ratchet, Clank, and Qwark. It's pretty funny, of course, and only a couple of minutes long so definitely worth a watch. Listen out for Qwark asking where the dubstep is.
There's also still no news on QForce coming to Vita – ouch.
Would you watch a Ratchet & Clank movie? Or do you think it's the kind of thing that only works as a game?
