There's the old saying that states "the pen is mightier than the sword." In the case of Spellirium, all you have to do is replace the "pen" with a "mouse" and the rest remains the same.
The game, created by Untold Entertainment, is a point-and-click adventure title that relies on the player's hold on the English language to engage in battle. It's a mash-up of wits, puzzles, and action to create one of the most intriguing indie titles we've seen so far this year, and it's now avaialble for pre-order.
Spellirium takes place in an alternate medieval universe where reading and writing have been outlawed. You play as Brother Todd of the Runekeepers, who must journey across the land and bring peace with the power of his words.
The game's main mechanic lets players make use of word combinations to defeat monsters. However, according to the official press release, it's way more than just forming words. Players will have to make use of palindromes, rhymes, and onomatopoeia depending on the situation. You can also use certain words to buy power-ups and other special items. It's a test on how well you paid attention in English class.
The name Untold Entertainment may seem familiar to some. It's the studio founded by Ryan Creighton, who in 2011 created Sissy’s Magical Ponycorn Adventure with his six-year-old daughter.
This isn't the game for everyone, although players who are interested can now put their money in. Pre-orders come with a free alpha build that features the prologue and two out of three acts. More acts and features will be added in a "kickENDER" campaign.
So far, there is no release date.
