Hawken Technician Update Adds New Mech, Map

April 19, 2013 by Josiah Renaudin

A significant update to the Hawken beta is out now, adding the Technician mech and the Front Line map.

Available now for all members of Meteor Entertainment and Adhesive Games’ Hawken beta, the new Technician update includes a slew of significant changes to the free-to-play mech combat title. Along with balance fixes and a few new aesthetic flairs, this additional content has introduced both an additional map to explore and a fresh mech to experience.

Front Line, the battlefield added in this latest update, is one of the game’s larger maps, supporting game types like Deathmatch, Team Deathmatch, Missile Assault, and Siege. However, it won’t take long for veteran players to notice that this is actually a reskinned version of a Hawken alpha map called Valkyrie, which Adhesive Games said the community has been asking for since the game’s transition into beta. It may be open, but tunnels and other more closed-off areas do exist in Front Line.

The Technician is the latest mech to be added to the mix, and if you’re a fan of Valve’s Team Fortress 2, think of this new class as this game’s Medic. A support character that trades offense for a slick set of recovery tools, the Technician is key if a squad of players hopes to maximize their time on the field of battle. The class’s repair torch can both heal allies and deconstructs enemy units, with its special ability, amplification, buffing the repair rate of the tool for a short amount of time.

These inclusions, along with fixes to established weapons and mechs, are all accessible now. Hawken is currently in open beta, and includes microtransactions in order to balance its free-to-play nature.
