The Hyperkin RetroN 4 Is Actually The Hyperkin RetroN 5

March 28, 2013 by Matt Hawkins

Sorry, no TurboGraphix-16 or Neo-Geo support included.

Remember our mention a while back of an all in one console that promised to play Nintendo Entertainment System games, Super Nintendo Entertainment System games, Sega Genesis games, and also Game Boy Advance games, all in glorious high definition?

Well, as noted, the brand new retro game-playing machine was to sport four different ports and was going to be unveiled at the Midwest Gaming Classic, which was this past weekend. So did the Hyperkin RetroN 4 make its intended world debut?

Nope. Instead, in its place was the Hyperkin RetroN 5. Same basic idea, except it sports five different cartridge slots. And what exactly will that fifth input be used for? Famicom games.

As also stated already, it will also sport 2 controller ports for each platform, with the exception of the Famicom (which had its controllers hard wired to the console itself) and Game Boy Advance (since there was no controllers per say).

Though once again, it will output visuals via HDMI, and produce a 720p signal. Furthermore, both NTSC and PAL carts will be accepted, plus full compatibility is being promised.

So cartridges that lock out chips (many different kinds were produced for all the systems above), and even the Super FX chip (which is specific to the SNES), will supposedly work.

Though we'll believe it when we see the thing play the Mega Drive/Genesis version of Virtua Racing (which had its own version of the Super FX chip, the Sega Virtua Processor).

According to Engadget, it's due this July and will cost less than $100.
