Rain, the upcoming arty puzzle-adventure game from SCE Japan, has a new trailer that demonstrates how it'll actually play. Sony has the six-minute video on its blog, as well as a few details from the team.
The story of the game is touching and sad. You play a boy who has followed “a girl with an invisible silhouette” into “the mysterious world of rain” in order to save her from the ghostly creatures that hunt her, only to discover that he has become invisible himself. In the gameplay trailer we get to see the girl as she runs from these creatures, though the boy never manages to quite catch up with her.
Despite the presence of ghostly assailants, it doesn't look like the game will involve combat, at least not in the stage we're shown in the video. Instead, the boy must make use of the fact that he disappears when not touched by the continuously falling rain, and hide in covered places until the monsters lose interest and move away.
Aside from running, the boy can also climb. So some of the challenge in the game will come from platform sections. It's not clear whether the game will involve more complicated environmental puzzles, but the game is so pretty I imagine I'll end up playing it even if it proves to be no more challenging than Journey.
Rain was first announced in August last year, and is due to launch for the PS3 some time in 2013. Will you give it a try?
