NCSoft’s publishing a new massively multiplayer online game! This one’s called Wildstar! What does it do that’s different from any of the other games they’ve made? Shut up and watch this trailer!
That was something, right? It half seems like it’s got this interesting and playful tone but it’s being stunted by the intense desire to pitch you on why you definately need to play the game, sure that’s why this trailer exists, but it doesn’t really do it seamlessly enough. It’s hard to know exactly what they’re going for when they’re half talking to you like a human, but then half talking to you like you’re an investor in a pitch meeting. The word “content” stands out a lot, like it’s being used with the same inflection as “synergy”.
Let’s not let that get in our way, because the, ahem, content the game actually offers seems very compelling. It’s an MMO, but it has elements of housebuilding, further group base building, competitive PVP (which, really, go back and watch that trailer again, does the term “PVP” really fit with the style they’re going for? Am I thinking too hard? I probably am. That writing really likely won't be reflective of the end experience, but hearing it is certainly a stumbling point) a variety of class styles and the choice of faction to be a part of.
That art style’s great, that and the voice of narator give off this Ratchet and Clank vibe that resonates pretty heavily. Maybe it’s the alien planetscape punctuated by machinery that’s scarring it, but in a way providing it’s own beauty? That was R&C's whole deal, wasn't it?
This seems really interesting! I hope they manage to get the tone right in the full game!
