The best Kickstarters come out of nowhere and instantly leave you with an insatiable desire to own what they’re pitching. Shovel Knight makes an excellent case for itself. I double dare you to watch the pitch video and not want a big piece of that video gamey cake. Cut me off a slice, Yacht Club Games, and put it on a disposable paper plate. What’s that? You’ve got a silly hat for me to wear and a cool party blower? I like your style. Let’s hit up that trampoline you’ve hired.
Shovel Knight is, reductively, very Mega Man influenced. There’s a strict adherence to a limited colour palette, the level design follows the same avenues, your health meter’s in the same place and you’ll fight bosses in closed off areas. I love Mega Man. None of this is a complaint. Instead of a mega-buster the game will focus on closer attacks using the Knight’s titular weapon (tool?). Traversal will also depend on using the shovel to dig around.
That music’s great too. Mixes in that feel you get from listening to The Sword where it’s like you’ve tuned into the music tastes of really cool medieval warriors wearing heck of spikes, only without period appropriate instrumentation.
The game needs $75,000 to be a reality. If you pledge $10 you’ll get a PC copy of the game on completion, and if you pledge $15 you’ll get a code to download it on a modern nintendo console! How cool!
Think about it. This game looks cool. I’m excited. Let’s fund a video game, friends.
