The team behind the Oculus Rift has posted a new update on its Kickstarter campaign with some unfortunate news for its backers: a Rift-compatible copy of DOOM 3 BFG Edition will no longer ship with the development kit. Here's the news straight from the horse's mouth:
“When we launched the Kickstarter campaign, we said we’d bundle a copy of DOOM 3 BFG Edition with each development kit as an extra “Thank you.” Unfortunately, we’ve been informed that DOOM 3 BFG Edition will not support the Rift development kit by the time we begin shipping.”
Though it sounds like the decision was out of the hands of the Oculus Rift team, some backers will probably be annoyed at this news. After all, DOOM 3 is a popular game that seems to fit perfectly with what the Oculus Rift does, i.e. allow the player to experience the game in a virtual reality first-person setting.
Luckily, the Oculus team will offer a variety of replacement rewards for those who pledged enough to hit a tier of rewards that included a copy of DOOM 3 BFG Edition. Backers can elect to receive either $20 in Steam Wallet credit (which would get you a copy of DOOM 3 BFG Edition without Oculus Rift support), $25 in Oculus Store credit (which could be put towards things like Oculus Latency Testers, tee shirts, and further development kits), or – if neither of those make you happy – a full refund.
Did you put down a pledge for the Oculus Rift? Does this news disappoint you?
