If you’re into preorders for your games and retailer-specific incentives, there’s one that’s coming soon for the upcoming DC and NetherRealm fighting game Injustice: Gods Among Us based on the excellent comic Red Son by Mark Millar. The DLC will add Red Son based story sequences disconnected from the plot of the inital game, while also giving costumes for Superman, Wonder Woman and Solomon Grundy. It was initally pitched as a UK-only exclusive through the Game chain of stores but will be coming to the US through GameStop
The book Red Son, to begin, is an alternate reality tale about Superman if he had crashlanded in the USSR instead of America. From that springboard it has larger themes of civil liberties being diminished in order for the state to prevail. Also, Batman’s in it but he’s wearing a russian hat.
Superman’s costume features a hammer and sickle emblem on his chest instead of his traditional S shape. Wonder Woman’s costume is reminiscent of what she wears in the book, but isn’t quite exact.
Oddly, at no point does Solomon Grundy appear. There are characters in both Red Son and Injustice that feature in both (Lex Luthor, Green Lantern, Batman), but for some reason NetherRealm have given a skin to one that doesn’t. Our presumption is that more DLC costumes will be on the way and that the ratios are being smoothed out to accommodate at least one for each character, not just piling on costumes for characters that appear in books more often. This can only be speculated on thus far.
We’ve reached out to a representative of the game for comment on why this decision was made.
