The latest PS3 firmware update that Sony has said would bolster security in the wake of the hacking of the console. A bunch of consoles have been permanently banned from Black Ops' multiplayer servers for hacking or cheating after their users installed the new firmware. Some have contested the presumption they are cheaters onf the game's official forums. This joins last week's Xbox Live mandatory update which also stopped pirated and modded copies of Black Ops and Modern Warfefare 2.
I can't help but feel Activison's hand behind this, given the target nature of the updates for the Call of Duty franchise. The root key of the PS3 was hacked and leaved the whole console and anything connected to it up to breach. There doesn't seem to be any way to control that with a software update given the nature of it. The only real way to stop it is from their end with denial to the servers. So why only Call of Duty? Is this a test run to see if it works. It is the largest multiplayer franchise on both consoles so it makes sense to keep things fair as not to lose business, but why stop there?
