The Walt Disney Company has released a report detailing its earnings for the first quarter of the fiscal year 2013 (which actually ended on December 29th 2012). Naturally, the company as a whole has grown, but the interesting part for us is that the Interactive division, which includes Disney games, is no longer making a loss.
For the same quarter of the last fiscal year (i.e. the three months ending on December 31st 2011), the Interactive division was the only division that made a loss under “Segment operating income”. And while the loss of $28 million should barely trouble a company which had an overall segment operating income of $2.444 billion for the first quarter of FY 2012, it's nice to see that this year they've managed to bring the Interactive side up to a positive $9 million.
Of course, that hasn't stopped Disney from closing Junction Point Studios, the studio behind the disappointing Epic Mickey 2 and its more successful prequel Epic Mickey. In fact, the company seems to be entirely focused on upcoming sandbox game Disney Infinity, which should – just like Skylanders – prove incredibly popular and sell out everywhere. Next year, the Interactive division may do even better.
