To determine the seventh and final game that would be included in this year's edition of the Evolution Championship Series, arguably the biggest and most prominent annual fighting game tournament in the United States, and perhaps the entire world, a tournament/charity drive was held.
In the end, a total of $225,744 was raised for the Breast Cancer Research Foundation, with Super Smash Bros Melee pulling in $94,683 of that total amount. As a result, that game has secured the final slot.
Via IGN, here we have the final line-up:
- Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3
- Super Street Fighter IV Arcade Edition
- Tekken Tag Tournament 2
- Mortal Kombat 9
- Street Fighter x Tekken
- King of Fighters XIII
- Persona 4 Arena
- Super Smash Bros. Melee
Again, this is the GameCube version of the game, and not it's the successor, Super Smash Bros Brawl, as one might expect. Asked any seasoned Smash Bros player, and 9 out of 10 will tell you that the Melee is far super to Brawl in a number of ways that only a fighting fanatic can truly understand.
The Melee community is so dedicated that there exists many mods that takes Brawl and alters it, as to make more Melee-like. So this is clearly validation for that group of people. Along with the fact that its even in EVO to being with; let’s not get started on people who refuse to believe it’s a fighting game to being with.
