Team Bondi’s LA Noire received a mixed response for its well written story, which was marred by wholly unnecessary car chases and occasionally stupefying detective sections.
Regardless of the game’s strengths and weaknesses, the one element that stood out above everything else it had to offer was its striking facial animation, which rendered the faces of its voice actors in real time and projected them into the game in startling detail. The detail on the faces was so good that it had a tendency to make the rest of the game look incredibly artificial by comparison.
The facial animation technology was developed by Australia-based studio Depth Analysis, which has since released a gag reel of the game. The footage has the game’s voice actors actors messing up their lines, rendered in real time on the faces of their characters in the game. It makes for a fascinating watch, and demonstrates the technology without any sort of tampering or tweaking by the game’s animators.
