Following yesterday's sudden (if not surprising) news that UK entertainment retailer HMV was headed into administration, some customers rushed into stores to spend their Christmas vouchers only to discover that staff can no longer accept them as payment. Predictably, some have responded with anger. One man who had bought a €40 gift voucher for his grandson for Christmas responded with theft.
The Irish Independent reports that Eric Nolan, from Dublin, Ireland, took his grandson into the shop and had him pick out three games – Euro Truck Simulator 2, The Sims 3 Town Life (let's hope the kid has The Sims 3 already, because there's no way they're going to let him return this expansion now), and Rail Simulator – and tried to convince staff to take the voucher in exchange. When they repeatedly refused (presumably following orders from their managers who in turn will have been instructed thus by the administrators in charge of helping the business through this time), he took the games and left.
Security followed him, but apparently didn't retrieve the items. Nolan told the Irish Independent that he will send the voucher and the difference in cash for the cost of the items to the store, saying:
“We are a nation of sheep – but I was determined to win this.”
