A Kickstarter campaign that was launched back in November last year to raise funds for Pathfinder Online – a fantasy sandbox MMO based on the titular tabletop RPG – is in danger of missing its target. At the time of writing, the campaign has fourteen hours left in which to raise approximately $125,000 to reach its goal of $1,000,000.
The project is an ambitious one. Before the team even started this Kickstarter, a previous campaign was run to raise the funds necessary to create a demo for the game – the Pathfinder Online Technology Demo – to prove what the developers wanted to achieve was possible. $1,000,000 may sound like a lot of money, but the FAQ for the campaign says that most of the budget will actually come from investors, and that the Kickstarter funds are just to speed up the process.
Under “Risks and Challenges”, the team has actually stated that “because Goblinworks has the funding to make Pathfinder Online, even if the timeline is a long one, there is only a very small chance that the game will never see release.” So it seems like even if the goal isn't reached game will still be made. But given that even with the $1,000,000 the team wants from backers the game won't be available until 2016, and given that Kickstarter only hands over the money if the full amount is raised, anyone who wants to see this project sooner rather than later should consider making a donation.
