The GameStick, an Android-based home console that was revealed via Kickstarter on Wednesday, has reached its funding goal in less than two days, with 28 days left to go. The current total (at the time of writing) stands at $138,355 pledged, well over the $100,000 stated goal. So far, 1,409 people have chosen to back the project, and one of those has even opted for the $1,000 or more reward tier that will net them an individually numbered gold GameStick bundle. The creator's father is responsible for at least $5,000 of the funding, winning him one of five dinners with his son Jasper Smith, and a Gold Stick bundle of his own. All rewards are expected to be delivered by April, when the console is due to launch.
The GameStick has been designed to provide a cheap console to encourage more people to use their televisions for gaming rather than watching, and an open platform for developers to get their products out quickly. It all sounds a lot like the Ouya, though the design is completely different. While the Ouya is very boxy, the GameStick is just a USB stick-shaped device that fits inside the flat rectangular controller for the console. The device apparently just plugs straight into the HDMI port on the television, and away you go.
With developers like Media Molecule supporting the console, are you excited for what the Game Stick will have to offer?
