If you liked Pikmin 1 but found that its sequel wasn't your cup of tea, then Pikmin 3 might be up your alley. In an interview with GamesMaster magazine, Nintendo and gaming icon Shigeru Miyamoto reveals that Pikmin 3 will be returning to its roots and will be more similar to Pikmin 1 than Pikmin 2.
Miyamoto admits that he didn't agree with the team's design decision in Pikmin 2 to make it less "stressful" for the players. He also reveals that in Pikmin 2, one of the team's goals was to get rid of as much stress as possible — a move that didn't sit well with Miyamoto.
Our main aim in Pikmin 2 was to get rid of any stress as much as possible, so that it would be very user-friendly. Well, I myself couldn't agree with that direction perfectly. That kind of nature of Pikmin 1 was exactly what I wanted to reproduce and I was actually intentionally doing so, so that Pikmin 1 could be a strategic game.
For Pikmin 3, Miyamoto wants to go back to basics; and that means adding stress back in to make the game more engaging.
When we started creating Pikmin 3 I gathered the main members who worked on Pikmin 2 and talked about how I thought it was important to get back to the basics of Pikmin 1. Or I should say that half of my job at that time wasn't just to talk, but rather to persuade them to understand what I intended to do and to agree to my idea.
While I'm sure both Pikmin 1 and 2 have their supporters, which version do you prefer? Would you want more "stress" in your Pikmin games just like what Miyamoto wants or is making it more user-friendly the right recipe in making sure more and more people get to play it?
