According to a new report from Polygon's Brian Crecente, Disney is about to unleash a new world of magic on the interactive entertainment community. Disney Infinity, teased to the publication with videos and images earlier this year, will feature a vast range of Pixar and Disney characters, together inhabiting an open sandbox universe designed to hold them all. Combining action-adventure and Minecraft-like building, the game will feature powers and abilities unique to each character, each adhering to the theme of their movie or TV show of origin.
While Crecente was hesitant to explain the gameplay too much, as the stage in development is too early, it's said that it will "support a plethora of ways to play including racing, shooting, building and destroying". A range of 30 supported actions will encompass abilities like "invisibility, super damage, swimming and ranged combat". Pre-created modes like capture the flag will exist, as will pre-created buildings and structures. The game will be made up of two major elements, playsets and and the rumpus room. Playsets are described as a collection of settings, action figures, back drops, and toys themed from a particular Disney property (as Polygon points out, this will might include pre-made stories and missions). The rumpus room will be where players can essentially free play, creating anything they want with set and non-set items.
Avalanche Software, the folks behind Toy Story 3: The Video Game and Cars 2: The Video Game, will be developing the game. Disney Infinity is said to be largely inspired by the Toy Box mode from Toy Story 3. It's expected on a number of platforms, though only consoles, iPad, and Android are confirmed for now. Some level of cross play has been promised. More details should be available this upcoming January at a major unveiling event for the press.
