Given how Angry Birds has already spawned toys, snacks, sodas, theme parks, Halloween costumes, even credit cards, is news of a tie-in motion picture be any surprise? Well, it shouldn't.
Angry Birds: The Movie will be a computer generated feature length film, one that's due in the summer of 2016. John Cohen, the producer of Despicable Me, has been signed on to do the same here, plus David Maisel, the executive producer of Iron Man, will play that identical role as well.
In the official press release, Cohen states:
"I'm so excited and honored to be working on this film with Mikael [Hed, CEO of Rovio Entertainment], David, and Rovio's incredibly talented game developers and artists… From both an entertainment and strategic perspective, Rovio is at the forefront of game innovation and is trailblazing terrific new ways for Angry Birds fans to interact with these characters. I've personally spent countless hours playing the Angry Birds games over the last few years, which I can now happily justify as research for the movie."
Most interesting of all is how Rovio intends on producing and financing the movie outside the studio system, as to retain full creative control, which is fairly unprecedented for any video game based movie. At the very least, given how successful the games have been, Rovio can certainly afford to take such a gamble.
