The fundraising campaign for space sim Star Citizen has come to a close with a record total of $6.2 million raised. The developers at Cloud Imperium Games Corporation were raising those funds through their own website as well as through Kickstarter, but even the Kickstarter campaign alone surpassed the $2 million combined goal. An update to the Kickstarter page brings a message from the developers that is, naturally, full of gratitude:
The battle is over and we – PC gamers, space sim fans, WingNuts, Lancers and the rest – have won. You've not only met every goal we set, you've exceeded them. Star Citizen will be released because of your dedication and your willingness to put your money where our mouths are. Our gratitude is immeasurable; we owe you our livelihoods and will not soon forget it.
Whatever worries people might have about games funded through things like Kickstarter, given that its popularity is fairly recent and some might argue unfounded, with $6.2 million I can't imagine a lot that could go wrong along the way. So, unless disaster strikes, Star Citizen should be released for PC, with plenty of extra features thanks to the multiple stretch goals the campaign has hit, in 2014. Can you wait?
