Even though Foxconn manufacturers most of the Playstation 3's, Wiis, Wii U's, and Xbox's in their factories in China, consumers within the country have not been able to purchase home console video game systems since 2000. However, that may be changing.
Sony recently recieved a "certification of quality" from a governing body tasked with maintaining Chinese safety standards. So, the Playstation 3 may end up being the first console sold in China since 2000. Despite this victory, some analysts have claimed that this is little more than a symbolic gesture considering that the governing body that awarded the certificate has little authority past issuing certificates.
Despite confirmation from Sony about the certification, the sudden availability of home consoles in China may not be a boon considering how differently gamers consume their entertainment there.
In a time when most game companies are having financial troubles, the opening of the Chinese market may give companies like THQ a brief respite. Still, it is unknown when or if the sale of these consoles will be given the final go-ahead. Piracy concerns from countries like the United States may further delay the sale of consoles in China.
