If you're familiar with the name Pier Solar, it can only mean one thing: you are a diehard Sega fanboy. Long story short, it's a homebrew RPG that was created to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the Mega Drive/Genesis console. The end result was the largest cartridge ever (64 megs), and supposedly the biggest 16-bit RPG of all time as well, which took seemingly forever to be realized.
But once it was, the final product was universally praised. Problem is, you have to still own Sega's 16-bit console to enjoy it (and getting one these days, no matter how cheap they are on eBay, is still too much effort for many). Though for not much longer: Pier Solar HD is on the way, to those who have access to an Xbox 360, PC, Mac, or Linux. Even a Dreamcast version is forthcoming as well (though it won't be in HD, given the system's architecture).
And how is Pier Solar's rebirth made possible? Via Kickstarter of course.
It's the year 2012 and a HD remake of a fan made Genesis game is perhaps the least shocking project to be up for funding. The Kickstater page has all the details, including the full rundown of incentives up for grabs. The most noteworthy for some is the Sega Dreamcast that is decorated with a custom Pier Solar paint job. Which can be yours with a minimum bid of $999.
Seems crazy? Of the five that are available, all but one is accounted for, four is left. The goal is $139,000, and with $51,721 already accounted for, and 28 days left, there's little doubt that Pier Solar HD will happen.
