Warner Bros. confirms it will be rebooting Mortal Kombat for the silverscreen and what's more, we even know what the budget is and who the director will be.
In a video interview posted on WebSeriesNetwork, Warner Bros. executive Lance Sloan confrimed that a new Mortal Kombat movie is indeed brewing and states, "We're preparing right now for the ['Mortal Kombat'] film with Kevin Tancharoen, [who] directed the digital series for us," he said. "He's at the helm of the forty, fifty million dollar film."
According to rumors (via WorstPreviews), the reboot is to "follow a lowly unlucky supermarket employee who discovers that he has "out of this world" powers and must decide between good and evil, even though the evil side has helped him discover his true potential and who he really is." Yeah, I know what you're thinking; but this is a Mortal Kombat movie and I highly doubt it's going to be winning any Oscars once it's released.
Now that we know it's budget will be at the $40-50 million mark, who's the fortunate (or unfortunate) soul tasked to direct it? It's none other than Kevin Tancharoen — who, I might add, directed the excellent Mortal Kombat web series Mortal Kombat: Legacy. So in a way, this should work, no?
To be honest, the first Mortal Kombat movie starring Christopher Lambert was actually one of the best game to movie adaptations I've seen. Of course, the same can't be said for its sequel but the first one was not that bad at all. Hopefully, this new rebooted version will surpass that in some way. Ah, heck, who am I kidding? Even if it's crap I might watch just to be able to shout "MORTAL KOMBAT!!!" or "Fatality" like I did when I was a kid.
