Maybe I just don’t want my recent return to Duckburg to end so quickly—or maybe DuckTales is just really fun, and reminded me why I like video games in the first place. Either way, this game exceeds my expectations. If you’re looking for a fun, maddening, and nostalgic romp through your 1980s childhood, DuckTales: Remastered fits that bill.

DuckTales: Remastered doesn’t try to do anything new. What it does, however, it does with a sense of style that doesn’t spoil your childhood memories. Likewise, the updated graphics and interface don’t detract from the retro feel of the game. It still feels like you’re playing an NES game, but the easy pogo option, the character voices – some of the original voice actors from the animated series were actually tapped for this re-release – and the saved game system genuinely enhance the experience.

One involved travelling from one side of the Amazon’s underground area using just the pogo stick, which is tricky but not out of reach for the average gamer. In the XBLA version at least, there are Leaderboards for things like number of playthroughs, most money earned in a playthrough, speedruns, etc. Try to beat my scores (WhiteSpyderZero), if you can!.

I sat down and played this game from start to finish in one evening and didn’t skip a single cutscene (I didn’t even notice I wasn’t skipping them until near the end). The entire time I was engrossed in the game and having genuine fun and it went by quite quickly, a duck blur, if you will. There was only slight frustration at the usual platform annoyances (“Why won’t you jump like I want you too!?â€). The music might just make up for it though.

While the mid-level cutscenes are distracting, everything else about the game succeeds. I went into it a bit worried after getting re-acclimated to the original, but this is a far more polished product than that and succeeds where it fell short. It controls smoothly, looks amazing, and its levels are well-worth replaying. There’s a lot of fun to be had with this and even if you didn’t grow up with the show’s theme song stuck in your head, I think it’s safe to say you’ll get its $15 asking price out of it easily if you love platformers. – See more at:

There’s something to be said for not messing with perfection, but you’ll be disappointed if you’re expecting a wealth of all-new content. Conversely, die-hard fans of the original could also argue that some of the subtle changes are ill-advised: Speedrunners will be annoyed that the game now forces you to explore entire maps to clear stages, and completists will likely gnash their teeth at the removal of the original game’s two hidden treasures.

In the wake of a barrage of retro game remakes, DuckTales: Remastered takes a stand, skillfully improving the presentation while stubbornly trusting all aspects of the original gameplay, perhaps to a fault. This doesn’t play like a new game – nor should it – so it may be difficult to convince the younger generation of players. But that isn’t the target demographic, either. This game is fan service, plain and simple. And in that role, it succeeds with flying colors. Through its old-school gameplay, snappy soundtrack, authentic dialogue, and unlockable art, DuckTales: Remastered is a faithful tribute, and a remaster done right.

DuckTales is an enjoyable trip down memory lane – but a lane that has had a few new architectural additions that have not all been sympathetically worked into the landscape. The original appeal is still there, and it definitely maintains the character of the NES classic, but I think it deserves better. If anything new was going to be added to the game, it should have been more levels. It’s clear the developer has the talent to be able to refine and improve the gameplay and level design, so why not go the full distance and follow through on that, rather than wasting time and money on something that adds little of value and substance to the game at best, and is an irritating distraction at worst.

DuckTales Remastered manages to give a classic game a new coat of paint but still bring back all those warm happy nostalgic feelings from the original classic. There is no attempt to rewrite history (DuckTales, Woo-Ooo!), and DuckTales Remastered is as faithful an remake as fans could have hoped for. It is a short romp and the $15 price tag is somewhat steep for the amount of content you get, but this is a wonderful throwback to the NES era of gaming.

That main theme is still as gloriously hummable as ever, of course, though to paraphrase the lyrics ingrained in the collective memory of a generation, it neither solves a mystery, nor rewrites history. We’re still unsure quite why DuckTales was deemed worthy of a remaster in the first instance, and in the latter case, the developer would clearly have been better taking a few more liberties with the source material. It’s easy to admire the developer’s evident love for the NES game – it’s clearly been handled with the kind of care only a genuine fan would provide – but after a few repetitive hours bouncing around DuckTales’ pretty but unremarkable worlds you’ll begin to realise that some treasures aren’t worth the effort of unearthing.
