Fire Emblem Heroes might be mobile, but its still a strategy RPG through-and-through. That means you’ll enter tactical combat with a unit of Heroes and gain XP. Leveling up is still important, even if you’ve spent a fortune on 5-Star Heroes, and upgrading skills will make your favorite Heroes even better as you progress up the maps.
It is always fun to crush your opponents, but actually earning enough XP to out-level the opposition takes time. To avoid spending too much time (and real-world cash), here are some of the handy tips we’ve picked up for XP farming in Fire Emblem Heroes.

Level Up Fast With These Tips | XP Farming Guide
Yes, you can farm for XP in Fire Emblem Heroes. Like most F2P mobile games, there’s a lot of grinding involved to make your Heroes tough enough to handle maps as you progress. Here, we’re going to reveal some tips and strategies you’ll want to take advantage of to get the most XP out of a map before moving on.
Note: To earn XP faster, spend Orbs at the Castle to upgrade. The more Orbs you spend, the bigger the XP bonus. If you have some extra Orbs around and don’t want to Summon more Heroes, throw those Orbs into the Castle’s XP upgrades.
Let’s go over the basics of XP and leveling first!
- Heroes can gain levels from earning XP in combat.
- XP is earned every time a Hero does damage to an enemy.
- Heroes can level up, to a maximum of Lvl 40.
- Heroes can only gain 1 Level Up at a time from killing a single enemy.
- If a Hero dies on a map, they will also lose all XP you gained and drop down to the level they were before entering the map.
- Death is not permanent. Any Heroes lost on a map will recover.
- At Level 20, Heroes can Rank Up to the next highest Star-Rank. 3-Star Heroes can become 4-Star Heroes, etc.
- Ranking up will reset a Hero back to Level 1.
- If you’re +5 Levels higher than your enemies, Heroes will not gain XP from attacking.
Those are some of the basic info you’ll need to keep in mind. There are also ways to earn more XP in a battle!
- Ways To Get XP Bonuses:
- Upgrade Your Castle! 20%, 40%, 60%, 80%, or 100% — you’ll always get a significant XP boost, even if you only upgrade to 20%. This is the most expensive (Orbs-wise) choice.
- Use your SP Skills. There is a bonus XP reward for using any of your SP Skills.
- Fight higher level enemies. Damaging enemies higher level than your Heroes reward XP bonuses.
- Just remember, doing 0 damage does not reward XP at all. You need to do at least 1 point of damage per attack.
- Healers don’t get an XP boost for healing — just the opposite. Healers get smaller and smaller XP returns as they heal. But, that also means Healers will always get plenty of XP, especially around Level 1-20.
- Killing Blows, or defeating an enemy with an attack, also rewards a small XP bonus.
Now, let’s get into the meat of this — what you’ll want to do to farm for XP.
XP Farming – Tips & Tricks
Note: Story Maps are a good way to get Orbs and Stamina Potions while earning XP. Simply finishing these maps is one of the better ways to earn XP.
- When you’ve completed Normal Maps, you can backtrack and complete Hard Maps or Lunatic Maps. Replaying Maps on higher difficulty is another good way to get some normal XP rewards.
- You can also replay any Map, but there is an XP penalty for doing so — you won’t get as much XP from maps you’ve already completed.
There are two ways you can farm for XP — with a single Hero, or with a group of Heroes. Using a Single Hero is the safest, although if your chosen Hero dies at any point on a map, they’ll also lose all the XP they’ve earned so far.
Farming with a full group (as in, you want to gain XP for all the Heroes at the same time) is trickier, but you’re less likely to lose ALL of them in a single map. 1-2 Heroes will always leave with some XP.
Needless to say, faring a single hero is the fastest way to earn lots of XP and gain those levels.
- Farming a Single Hero – Tips
- Party Recommendations: XP Farming Hero, Healer, Dancer (Butler), and Tank / DPS.
- To help back-up your XP Farming Hero, you’ll want a healer specifically to keep that Hero alive, a Support to lower damage / defense from enemies, and a Tank to absorb hits that won’t easily die.
- The Tank can be swapped out for a Hero that kills too, if you need to wipe out some pesky enemies before the XP farming can begin.
- Check the Stratum for advantageous colors. Your chosen XP farming Hero wants to fight enemies that can’t hurt them — check the color of your Hero vs. the color of the enemies / tiles in the Stratum map.
- A map filled with Sword (Red) enemies can’t deal with Lances (Blue).
- Hit a single opponent OFTEN for LOW DAMAGE. That’s key. You can even heal the enemy to keep the loop going. The trick is, you’ll want to box a single opponent in, somewhere they can’t escape, and then force that enemy to fight your XP Farming Hero. Slowly whittle away their health for best results.
- Don’t have an advantageous Stratum map? Replay Floor 1 with Level 1 Heroes to reset those higher level floors. It doesn’t always work as intended, but you can get new rolls on future floors this way.
- Party Recommendations: XP Farming Hero, Healer, Dancer (Butler), and Tank / DPS.
Pegasus Knights can be especially tricky to gain levels for in the early game. At Level 1-20, these flying Knights can be torn up like tissue paper. The safest way to gain XP for a Pegasus Knight is to box-in a Mage at melee range. Mages can’t attack Heroes one square adjacent — once the Mage is boxed-in, simply swap in the Pegasus Knight and keep attacking to earn plenty of XP.
And don’t forget! Save your Crystals for your favorite Heroes… or Heroes that need to level-up skills to be useful right from the start.
