Doctor Strange recently just hit the big screen and it’s managed to receive a 90% on Rotten Tomatoes. The character is quickly becoming a fan favorite with plenty of interest in a sequel. Since the film has just hit the theaters, news, and information of a sequel is pretty tightlipped.
With that said, there are a few rumors and suggestions making their way online. We compiled some of the most popular predictions as to what we may see in a Doctor Strange 2. Doctor Strange Spoilers Ahead!
Nightmare Villain
We could see Nightmare show up in the sequel to Doctor Strange. Murmurings are already starting to spread online after Marvel director Scott Derrickson spoke with IGN. During their conversation, the director spoke of his interest in seeing Nightmare play some type of role within Doctor Strange 2.
Furthermore, with Nightmare, we would likely see the Nightmare Realm as its own dimension. In the comic books, Nightmare shows up alongside the debut of Doctor Strange, but for the first big cinematic movie, the character was written off.
Nightmare was a no show simply because it was too complex of an idea to introduce everything in terms of Nightmare and the idea of being in a dimension in just one film. With Nightmare being an iconic character for the start of Doctor Strange, the sequel would likely play around with this character in some capacity.
Ancient One Backstory
Tilda Swinton played the Ancient One, a mysterious character that acts as a mentor to the main protagonist, Doctor Strange. However, in terms of the actual cinematic film, the history of the Ancient One is still relatively unknown.
With the sequel of Doctor Strange, we might learn more about the Ancient One, especially if Marvel doesn’t opt to release a standalone prequel featuring Tilda Swinton’s character. However, with the character being portrayed by Tilda Swinton, there has been plenty of backlash due to the character being a Caucasian woman instead of an Asian male as it was written originally in the comic books. This could mean a spin-off of the character outside of Doctor Strange may be a tough sell.
Thor Team Up
At the end of the Doctor Strange film, there is a mid-credits scene in which Thor, portrayed by actor Chris Hemsworth, shows up. From what we know, Thor appears to seek help in search of his missing father Odin.
There are rumors online that because of this mid-credits scene, Doctor Strange will show up in the upcoming Thor: Ragnarok. Of course, this could also bleed into a Doctor Strange 2 film, though we’ll likely know more after Thor: Ragnarok hits theaters on November 3, 2017.
Karl Mordo Villain
Following up after the mid-credits scene is another post-credits scene that features the character Karl Mordo. It’s here that we see Mordo has attacked Jonathan Pangborn and that could indicate we’ll see Karl rise up to be the next big villain.
This would line up with the comic books as well. Karl Mordo within the comics attempts to kill the Ancient One but was stopped by Doctor Strange, though throughout the comic book series, we see Karl Mordo show up numerous times to take on Strange. With this being the cinematic universe, it will be interesting to see how long Mordo sticks around.
Avengers Cameos
It’s been confirmed that Doctor Strange is set to appear in Avengers: Infinity War and with that, there are rumors that we may also see Doctor Strange appear in the fourth Avengers film which will be releasing in 2019.
With these characters working together, there may be room for a few extra cameos in Doctor Strange 2 which is expected to launch sometime in the 2020s, during the Phase four slate of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
