How Does Video Game AI Work?

August 9, 2016 by Ian Miles Cheong

Gameranx explains how video game AI works.

Artificial Intelligence has been the subject of many a sci-fi movie and novel, but in the real world, its applications are entirely limited to the industrial sector or–in the case of video games–the behavior of enemies and allies.

From the simplistic enemies who followed you around from point A to point B and simply waited for you to show up in the classic Resident Evil, to the devious computer opponents in Starcraft and the monsters in The Witcher 3, AI is what determines how the enemies you face behave. The smarter the AI is programmed to be, the more challenging they are to defeat. Other uses of AI also include summoning zombie hordes in Left 4 Dead and its sequel and making sure the player always feels on edge with the challenge provided.

In this new video, we take a look at how video game AI works, and what it offers.
