Legend of Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom is a very different version of our favorite adventure game series — even something as simple as defeating monsters isn’t easy when you’re playing as Zelda. Instead of using a sword and shield, Zelda needs to use objects she can copy. The right objects can defeat monsters, and once you defeat a monster, you can summon that monster to fight for you. If you’re stuck at one of the earliest challenges, this is how to solve it.

How To Defeat Monsters On Suthorn Beach
At the very start of the game, Zelda will be forced to fight monsters on the beach. This is after Zelda escapes the Hyrule Castle dungeon. After emerging from the water, you’ll see glowing rocks. Learn the Rock echo ability and equip it [Hold D-Pad Right] and summon rocks by pressing [Y]. Once a rock is summoned, Zelda can pick it up over her head and throw it.
- NOTE: This is important. In the same room (and the beach) you’ll also find Wooden-crate echoes. If you haven’t learned these yet, learn them. Like rocks, you can lift up crates and throw them.
Dealing Damage To Enemies: Press [A] to lift a Wooden-crate or a Rock echo. Naturally, you can also do this to normal crates or rocks in the environment.
Zelda can’t attack the green monsters on the beach directly. She can spin with [R] but that won’t damage enemies. Zelda will still take damage for touching enemies. You also can’t summon echoes on top of enemies — summoning an echo will only push enemies away. It won’t harm them.
To damage enemies, use the wooden-crates or rocks (or the wooden-crate or rock echoes) and lift them up with [A]. Once they’re over your head, throw them with [A]. You can also target enemies with [ZL] to make sure you throw lands on the target you want to hit.
Collecting Monster Echoes
After defeating an enemy you’ve never defeated before — like these green blobs — an echo will appear. Learn the Zol Echo and you’ll be able to summon your own enemies. Like tables or rocks, you can summon up to three Zol. Target enemies and your summoned echoes will specifically target what you aim for. Later you’ll be able to summon more, but for now you’re limited to three.
Leaving Suthorn Beach
To escape the beach, place a table echo (or bed echo) near the rocks beneath the spikey enemies blocking your path. Swim south in the water and jump up onto the rocky ledges, creating a path with echoes up to the northern cave exit.
- NOTE: Throwing rocks will also destroy the spikey enemies — called Sea Urchins. Throw rocks echoes to clear a path.
At the cave entrance at the top-right of the beach area, throw rocks (or rock echoes) to destroy the Sea Urchins and enter the cave. Inside the cave, place a Sea Urchin to attract the bat (Keese) enemy. It will destroy itself by attacking the spikey echo. Don’t miss the Keese echo! Learn it. Flying enemies are very useful.
Leaving the side-scrolling caves leads to Suthorn Village — the first village of the game — and a much larger area to explore. Soon Zelda will be free to use all the skills she’s learned.
