The Mountain Shrine is the first location where the Sphinx resides in Dragon’s Dogma 2 — and to inch closer to her prized golden treasure chest, you’ll need to solve a series of five riddles. You can solve these riddles in any order, and just hearing a riddle won’t lead to certain death. You can even fail a riddle, but you’ll want to get them all right for the biggest reward of all. To help you overcome, here are the quick-and-dirty explanations to solve all five of the Mountain Shrine riddles.
A Game of Wits | Quest Guide
The Sphinx has five riddles — for each riddle you solve, you’ll unlock one chest. To answer her riddles, you need to present an item or person. Some of these riddles are really weird.
Because one riddle involves a dungeon, you’ll need to level up before attempting this challenge. I recommend waiting until Level 20 before walking the path that leads to the Sphinx. It is extremely dangerous for low level players and pawns.
Riddle of Eyes
In this riddle, you’ll enter a dungeon filled with treasure chests and traps. You need to acquire the most valuable item and show it to the Sphinx. Beware the Enraged Ogre in the underground. You don’t need to fight it to progress.
- Solution: Sealing Phial — Just as you enter the dungeon, climb the cracked wall to the right. There’s a hidden chest directly above the entrance. You don’t even need to enter.
Reward: Sealing Phial + Wakestone
Riddle of Madness
For this riddle, the Sphinx wants to see your most beloved. That can mean multiple things. But there’s one easy solution.
- Solution: Pick up your Main Pawn and place them on the pedestal. Talk to the Sphinx and agree that this is ‘your most beloved’ to solve the riddle.
Reward: Portcrystal
Riddle of Conviction
In this riddle, the Sphinx will request your most valuable item — or your heaviest, if you interpret the question. She’ll take whatever you give her with no promise to return it.
- Solution: Give the Sphinx your most valuable item. A magic weapon — or a heavy item. I traded the Elite Camping Kit.
Reward: The chest will contain whatever item you traded to solve this puzzle.
Riddle of Rumination
For this riddle, make note of the location where you first collected a Seeker’s Token. If you’ve never found a Seeker’s Token, you’ll need to find one before you can do this riddle.
- Solution: Return to the location where you first found a Seeker’s Token. For us, the first Seeker’s Token we discovered past the Gathering of Beasts, in the area where the first Cyclops was fought.
- Later a Minotaur will be in this shallow area of the river. Past the Riftstone, look for a dead-end path to the left that leads to a Seeker’s Token. At the location, you’ll find a unique item called a Finder’s Token. Return it to the Sphinx.
NOTE: When you talk to the Sphinx, you will be on a time limit of seven days. You must return the Finder’s Token to the Sphinx before seven days are up or you’ll fail.
I recommend placing the Portcrystal at the Mountain Shrine and use a Ferrystone to return to her. You’ll earn more free Ferrystones, so using one can’t hurt.
Reward: x3 Ferrystone
Riddle of Wisdom
The Sphinx wants to meet its ‘Parent’ — this is an extremely strange puzzle, but if you explore the world long enough, you might spot something that the Sphinx wants to see.
- Solution: Go to the Harve Riftstone and recruit the Pawn named SphinxParent or SphinxFather. Return to the Sphinx and show her — she’ll accept the answer. You can also select the Riftstone of Fellowship from any Grand Riftstone.
Reward: 1200 RC
After solving all five riddles, the Sphinx will fly away with her final treasure toward the south of the map. To get that big treasure, you’ll need to track down the Sphinx’s new location in Battahl — but at least we’ve finished this set of puzzles!
