MMOs are everywhere, even if you’re not playing them yourself. If you’re looking for some in 2024 to try out, take a look at these!
Update: We will continue to update this list periodically throughout the year, so you will likely see some games removed or added. These games are not ranked in any particular order, as the focus here is to showcase titles we are excited to see hit the marketplace.
#19 Blue Protocol
There are so many MMOs out in the world that it can be a bit odd to start out with one over the other. But with Blue Protocol, it’s a good enough place to start. The title puts you in an anime-style world where you have no idea who you are or where you came from, but you’ll figure it out eventually!
The game boasts a simple control scheme to let you control your character in battle, which will be great for when you’re knee-deep in a conflict. You’ll be able to customize everything about your character. Your looks, your combat style, etc., all of it is up to you to decide!
#18 The Quinfall
There are many benefits to playing an MMO, such as being in vast worlds to explore with loads of content that are so entertaining you can’t help but play them more.
In The Quinfall, the game boasts that it has the largest area of ANY MMO ever created. Hopefully, you’ll find plenty to do within it because gamers don’t do well with large empty spaces. That’s something certain titles have been struggling with lately.
Like a true world, the realm you’re in will adapt and shift depending on time and the seasons around you. Nothing will be stale, and that’s something to praise.
#17 Chrono Odyssey
How about next we go to an MMO with a deep combat system that’ll keep you on your toes and make every battle fresh? Does that sound like fun? If so, Chrono Odyssey might be the one to check out in 2024.
The game has multiple game mechanics working in its favor, including having the ability to wield multiple weapons at once and bring them out during a fight. Plus, there’s a time manipulation element you’ll be able to use, too. That’s not used in MMOs, or at least not on a large scale.
Then, when you’re ready for the boss battles, you’ll fight alongside scores of players to bring down terrible beasts.
#16 ArcheAge 2
When you hear of a game having a sequel, you likely think of a franchise or something that needs the sequels to keep things fresh. MMOs don’t do that often for obvious reasons. But hey, there’s an exception to every rule, right?
For ArcheAge 2, the first game was a success, and they did a sequel to make things even better. The title from Korea will boast many things to keep gamers interested, including using Unreal Engine 5 to make the graphics leagues above what other MMOs use. That’s something many will be interested in.
#15 BitCraft
BitCraft wants to do something that many MMOs don’t think about. It wants you to go into the world and build it up how you see fit! That’s the crux of the game, and you’ll likely have a blast enacting its vision.
You’ll get to build your towns anywhere you desire! Do you like a particular patch of forest? Build something on it! Did you find something valuable in the mountains? Then, build a place to stake a claim on it! And that’s just scratching the surface of what you can do.
The world is procedurally generated, so the options you’ll have available to you are virtually endless.
Plus, they’re going to expand and grow what the first game had.
#14 Ashfall
We’re past due for a game that deals with a post-apocalyptic future. Why? Well, not everything can be nice and pleasant! Where’s the drama in that?
Ashfall has you on a quest to find the “Core of Creation,” and you’ll need to search for it in a vast wasteland that is full of perils and monsters. The good news is that you’ll have plenty of options for how to deal damage to foes. Plus, you can play with friends or recruit other characters on your journey to find the core!
The journey won’t be easy, but it will be rewarding if you give it a chance.
#13 Path of Exile 2
Path of Exile 2 is an MMO with plenty to do and is the sequel to one of the best action RPG-style titles ever. That’s not something we say lightly, but the team behind the game truly put a lot of effort into making the original game fun and long-lasting. So now imagine what they’ll do with the sequel!
Regardless, you don’t need the original game to enjoy the follow-up. Instead, you merely need to play and try to withstand the dark world you’re dropped into.
The game will have a deep story spread across six acts, and there will be lots of ways to build your character to defeat enemies!
#12 Once Human
The world used to be a place where it was nice, and everyone could live well enough. But in Once Human, that world is gone. You’re still on Earth, but it’s a version of the planet that’s infected with an alien entity that lives in everything from the animals to the plants and even the water! You are someone who has survived the initial infection and is trying to survive, but that won’t last long unless you fight back.
But how can you fight back when the resources you need to survive are infected? Hard choices will need to be made. But can you make them?
#11 Gray Zone Warfare
Platform: PC
Release Date: 2024
It’s honestly a little surprising that there aren’t more military MMOs in the world, but that might be because there are plenty of FPS games to go around, and third-person shooters are just as prominent.
In Gray Zone Warfare, you’ll be part of a private military company that was sent to a mysterious island where strange things have happened on. Your mission is to weed out opposition via other PMCs and get any loot that can benefit your client.
You’ll have total freedom with your weapons and exploration. Go where you want, wield the weapon you want, and do as much damage as you desire.
#10 Everywhere
We’ve shown you many games and will show you many more where freedom is a key part of the gameplay process. But in Everywhere, things are going to get taken to another level. Yes, it will still have your “traditional action elements” that you can look forward to, but it’s much more than that.
The game will have the “backbone” of an action game but give players the freedom to build just about anything they want within the world. It’s from a team that used to work at Rockstar Games, and recent reports state that it has the potential to be something special if they can work everything out.
In other words, keep your eye out for this.
#9 Project: Ragnarok
Here’s another title that was supposed to be out by now, and we’re wondering if it’ll ever be released. Project: Ragnarok wasn’t just going to be an MMO. It was going to be a true AAA-style MMO with some of the best graphics around. Plus, the team behind it was promising that the RPG action would be really involved to keep players interested.
So where is the game now? We don’t know. While early views of it looked pretty, other sightings indicated that the game wasn’t close to being finished. Perhaps it’s still not, so we haven’t seen more of it. Whether it comes out or not is anyone’s guess.
#8 Plan 8
Picture this: you suddenly wake up in a place you don’t remember. As you try to look around, you find yourself in a skeletal exosuit of unknown design and have a letter telling you to search for someone named “K.B.” How’s that for a wake-up call?
That’s the plot of Plan 8, and as you wander through its world, you’ll find there are more questions than answers, no matter how you play. For example, there are plenty of enemies to fight, including rather monstrous ones.
You’ll need to use your exosuit and other weapons you gain to fight back against them. But will it be enough in the end?
#7 Soulframe
Not much is known about Soulframe, but based on what we’ve seen in trailers and hints, the game will have an expansive world and ask you, the “envoy,” to free those who have been trapped upon its shores.
Ironically, the only reason your characters will be in this land is because they’ve also been washed ashore to this place. Once you’re there, you’ll need to find out more about the souls who are trapped and can find the songs to release them from their bindings!
If you wish to ensure that you get the name you want, you can sign up for the game now!
#6 Throne and Liberty
One of the things that MMOs try to maintain is that no matter who is playing the game, their impact matters on the title. Throne and Liberty is one such game that will allow that because the whole point of the title is for players to try and take the throne from an evil ruler.
But it’s not just about getting the throne; it’s about keeping it. Specifically, keeping it from the other players! So you’ll be fighting off those who want to take the throne you just got!
Or, you can ignore the throne and roam around the lands doing other tasks and having different adventures. The choice is yours.
#5 Earth From Another Sun
While many MMOs give you places to explore, only a few can provide you a whole galaxy to call home and to run wild in. Earth From Another Sun is just that, and it’s one that encourages you to play with friends as you attempt to do whatever you want.
Will you be someone who goes from planet to planet and sees what adventures await them? Will you attempt to make deep relationships with those you encounter?
Or will you create an army of ships and attempt to take control of everything out there? The path is yours to make, so have fun while you do it!
#4 Destiny 2: The Final Shape
The state of Bungie right now is dismal, and gamers are right to wonder if things like Destiny 2: The Final Shape will turn out like they hope it will. That’s fair to ask because when a company does mass layoffs like they have, one can only wonder how the game will be affected.
Regardless, the title will bring everything that the game has done with its story to a close. Everything you’ve been fighting for will come down to this final chapter of the tale.
Do you have what it takes to stop The Witness? You and your allies will find out soon!
#3 Dune: Awakening
2024 will be a big year for this franchise, as the second part of the modern movie saga is coming out, and Dune: Awakening will soon join it. The MMO will put you on Arrakis and have you create a destiny for yourself with your two hands.
But what will that destiny be? That’s something only you can decide. Will you try to become the ruler of this world and others? Will you try and bring other forces to their knees? Will you seek out alliances in an attempt to do more? Or will you go it alone? The choice is always yours to make.
#2 World of Warcraft: The War Within
It’s no secret that this beloved MMO has lost a lot of steam over the years. You might think Blizzard would “rethink things” and wonder how to proceed forward slowly.
Instead, it recently announced a set of THREE expansions that’ll come over the next few years, and the first is World of Warcraft: The War Within.
In this first expansion of the “WorldSoul Saga,” you’ll head not for a new country within Azeroth but into the ground and seek out the threats that lurk within the depths of the world!
With a spider army waiting to cause havoc, you’ll need to team up with other players to save Azeroth once again!
#1 Final Fantasy XIV: Dawntrail
It didn’t go well when Square Enix first tried to make an MMORPG out of its beloved RPG franchise. But that’s why you try and give things a second chance and learn from your mistakes! And guess what? They did, and then some.
So when you enter Final Fantasy XIV: Dawntrail, you’ll be in the first expansion featuring content after the end of the years-long story wrapped up in the previous content drop. As the name implies, it’s the “dawn” of a new day, and you’ll get to blaze a new trail across a new land.
With new adventures awaiting you, why not give it a chance?
