The PS4 was one of the best consoles ever made, and even though the PS5 is out, it’s the previous generation that has more games currently. Many of those titles are open world games, and if you like playing those with friends, try out these twelve.
#12 Minecraft
Minecraft isn’t your typical open-world game, so that’s why it’s first on our list.
You’ll indeed get to play the game alongside friends in various modes. You can work together with them to build whatever you can think up or fight alongside them in crafted worlds for you to explore. You can find some featuring Batman or head to Jurassic Park. There’s plenty to do.
There’s even a survival mode to check out if you get bored with everything else. The game isn’t meant to be the deepest multiplayer experience or open world. But it gets the job done, and it’s fun to play.
#11 Tom Clancy’s The Division 2
The first game in the series put you in New York during a time of great crisis and asked you to help reclaim the city. But things are getting even more critical in Tom Clancy’s The Division 2. Washington, D.C., is under siege by various forces attempting a coup.
You and numerous other agents are awakened to take back the capital and ensure that democracy reigns. Doing so won’t be easy, as enemy forces will be well-armed and positioned to stop you. So roam around the capital and do what you need to so the country can be whole again.
#10 Tom Clancy’s Ghost Recon Wildlands
Imagine a future where a cartel completely runs a country. That doesn’t sound like a place you want to live in, right? In Tom Clancy’s Ghost Recon Wildlands, that has happened to Bolivia, and it’s up to your Ghost unit to take the fight to them and reclaim freedom for its people.
How you take down the cartel depends on your playstyle. Do it alone or with a squad of four players. Pick off the leaders individually, or disrupt their supply chains so you can flush them out into the open.
Either way, the goal is the same, reclaim the country.
#9 Rust: Console Edition
Rust: Console Edition is the port of the popular survival game where you must survive. No, really, that’s the point of the game. You wind up on an extremely dangerous island, and your goal is simply to make it to the next day and then the one after that.
Start small, get materials to clothe yourself, and fend off immediate threats. Then search the island for items that can up the ante and take on more pressing dangers.
You can join factions or fight them off solo. You need to remember that everyone is out to get you, so get them first!
#8 7 Days to Die
Most survival open-world games provide you with significant enough space to live and explore. 7 Days to Die takes that to the next level, providing players with 100 square kilometers to roam about.
The game prides itself on its depth and the dangerous nature of its world. You’ll be able to explore multiple areas and get to do in them what you want, all the while avoiding the zombie menace that could be behind every corner.
Find weapons to defend yourself, build shelter and then build defenses to ensure it withstands the hordes, or work together with other players, so you’re never alone!
#7 The Forest
Survival games within an open world are very popular. After all, it encourages you to explore the world so you can find the resources needed to survive within it.
In The Forest, you and your partners are survivors of a plane crash. You land in a forest and attempt to survive, only to find more going on here than you thought. Specifically, monsters from underneath the area come out when night falls, and they want to eat you.
During the day, you’ll scavenge supplies, craft shelters, and make weapons. Then at night, you’ll fight off the swarms of monsters and hope to make it to dawn.
Good luck with that.
#6 Red Dead Online
There are two online titles from Rockstar Games on this list, which shows you how popular the dev is regarding this kind of title.
While it is the lesser of the two, Red Dead Online is a fun experience for those that take part in it.
You’ll become an outlaw on the frontier plains of early America, then attempt to make a life for yourself. But that life depends on what you desire. You can be someone who rides solo and tears through towns, causing havoc. Or perhaps you’ll form a crew to rob trains and remove emissaries of the law.
It’s your journey, do with it what you will.
#5 Elden Ring
Admittedly, Elden Ring is primarily a single-player-focused title. From Software expanded its reach within the game by making the title open world and allowing players new freedoms they never had before. However, not unlike in past games, there are some multiplayer elements for you to enjoy.
There is a co-op feature within the game that many have enjoyed, and then there’s the Coliseums. These are where you can have PVP matches and see if your builds stack up against others. Each coliseum has different types of PVP battles, so try them all out to see which you like the best.
If not? Then go fight tough bosses. That’ll keep you satisfied.
#4 Destiny 2
Bungie aimed for the stars with Destiny 2 to improve on their original title and fulfill many of the fans’ wishes. If nothing else, the game is a grand multiplayer experience that will take you to the far reaches of our solar system and continues to get content to this day.
You’ll play as a Guardian on a new mission to save humanity and beyond, but that’s just the start of things within the game. You’ll be able to team up with friends to explore the various planets you can access, do raids, and more.
The game is free to play in part, so why not try it out if you haven’t already?
#3 ARK: Survival Evolved
There’s something to be said for a game that allows you to both play against one another and play with each other while the goal is still the same. ARK: Survival Evolved strands you and however many other people you want on an island with nothing to your name.
The island is full of dangers, including dinosaurs, and you must scrounge what you can to get equipped enough to stand a chance against them.
It’s all on you to overcome the odds and get the technology and resources needed to survive. So if you need help to do that? Then by all means.
#2 No Man’s Sky
We fully understand the irony of this entry being so high on our list. But there’s a reason for it. No Man’s Sky was one of the original “it was released way too soon” games. But Hello Games made a concerted effort to fix that and turn it into the exploration game that it is now.
That includes finally delivering on the multiplayer component of the title. That means you can explore their vast universe with friends and see what each world offers.
The game has millions upon millions of worlds to explore, each with something new. So why not take a spin through space with some friends?
#1 Grand Theft Auto Online
If you want to know how successful Grand Theft Auto Online is, you need only remember that the online expansion of GTA 5 was just that, an expansion that was bundled with the mainline game. But it soon became so popular that Rockstar Games made it its own title and has been supporting it for many years.
You’ll get to be your own character and attempt to set up a criminal empire. You’ll have plenty to do as you wander around the vast city doing jobs, fighting rivals, and making yourself the biggest force in the area. So what are you waiting for? Crimes don’t commit themselves!
