Bayonetta 3 is the latest game in Platinum’s bombastic and over-the-top series starring the eponymous Bayonetta. Tight combat and tighter combat attire are trademarks of the series, and Bayonetta 3 is in no short supply of either but also manages to sneak in some new mechanics here and there to keep the game feeling fresh.

Collectables have often been strewn about the world of Bayonetta, and these have always ranged from simple consumables to full-blown upgrades. The third entry brings entire levels that have been locked away, and finding the key to them is easier said than done. Enter the humble Familiar and their Umbran Tears Of Blood.

What Are Umbran Tears Of Blood?

There are a total of three Familiars in every chapter of Bayonetta 3. These take the form of small animals, like cats and birds, and they hold the key to unlocking a series of challenging missions. Those keys are Umbran Tears Of Blood. Find them all in a chapter, and you can give them a whirl – just be aware that they are fairly challenging.

Familiars, for the most part, are small challenges in and of themselves. You can find a cat, but that cat might not be in the mood to join you on your journey. This tends to lead to a challenging chase sequence around a small area. Sometimes you need to outwit the Familiar, other times, you are forced to just brute force it and outrun the bugger.

How To Find The First Familiar

Chapter 1 is quite a lengthy level that takes place over several large areas. The first Familiar can be found the moment you enter Shibuya. Simply move left and head towards some ruined buildings. The Familiar takes the form of a cat and can be spotted very clearly by the red glow that emanates from it.

The cat is very fast and is more than happy to run circles around you. To catch it, you need to use your Madama Butterfly transformation (dash twice in quick succession). Chase the cat and aim to run into it by cutting corners. You should be able to nab the Familiar without much trouble.

How To Find The Second Familiar

The second Familiar is a Toad and it can be found loitering atop a coffee shop’s sign. Keep an eye out for Perseus Cafe immediately after complete Verse 9. You will hear a ribbit as you are flying across a gap. We actually obtained this familiar by accident just doing the jump, so it’s very easy to do in either instance.

How To Find The Final Familiar

The final Familiar is a bit tricky and can be found indoors. Later in the Chapter, you will enter a large cylindrical room, with your only viable path of progress being down. However, you don’t want to do that. When you enter this large room, you will be able to see a glowing raven.

To catch it, once again transform into Madama Butterfly, and approach it from the right. This will cause the raven to take flight and fly around the room. What you want to do is immediately turn around when it takes off and cut it off. You will have to jump into it to catch it, but this is a very simple jump and you should be able to get it with very little practice.

With your last Familiar caught, you will unlock your first secret level. This will be announced to you once you have completed the Chapter and can be accessed from the Chapter Select screen.

We have more Bayonetta 3 guides on the way, so keep an eye out! Until then, have fun slaughtering across the multiverse.
