Black Ops 3: How Is The MX Garand?

February 15, 2016 by Ian Miles Cheong

Black Ops 3’s MX Garand reviewed.

The latest update for Call of Duty: Black Ops 3 added a ton of new items to unlock from the Black Market, which are available exclusively through supply drops. Among them, five new weapons were added, including the MX Garand, a futuristic take on the WW2 standard issue combat rifle, the M1 Garand.

If you’re expecting it to work like other semi-automatic rifles like the M14, you may be in for a rude awakening. The MX Garand works exactly like the original gun it’s based on–the aforementioned M1 Garand. A design quirk of that gun is that each and every round in the mag has to be fired before the gun can be reloaded. It comes with 8 rounds by default, or 12 if you upgrade it with the Extended Mag attachment. You’ll hear the familiar “ping” sound when it needs to be reloaded.

The gun has a good rate-of-fire with very little recoil, allowing skilled players to take careful shots in quick succession. If you prefer to hold down the trigger for automatic, look elsewhere–this weapon’s semi-auto and requires you to pull the trigger manually each time.

Due to its low recoil and high accuracy, the MX Garand works best at a mid to long ranges. You can kill anyone in two bullets.

Due to the way the reloading system works, you should fire the gun and use up your ammo so you can reload and enter an engagement with a fully loaded magazine. It takes a bit of getting used to, but if you’ve ever played Day of Defeat or one of the original WW2-era Call of Duty games, you’ll feel right at home with the MX Garand.
