- #1 Samurai Jack Battle Through Time
One of the best things about the Nintendo Switch is the simple fact that it’s got a bunch of games for all types of genres no matter who you are and what you like. So for example, do you like samurai games? Great! They’ve got at least 12 for you to enjoy.
#13 I am Setsuna
Fans of Chrono Trigger will love this next JRPG. I am Setsuna is very reminiscent of the Chrono trigger games with some additional icing that only serves to further enhance the game. I am Setsuna features a great story, stunning visuals, and a lovely art style. It’s a tough game though, perhaps drawing again from its Super Nintendo counterparts. The characters and their tales are immensely engaging and peppered with little secrets, it’s almost impossible to resist growing fond of each one. The skill trees are detailed and allow you to build your characters out to be very powerful warriors.
#12 Samurai Warriors 5
PC | Xbox | PlayStation | Nintendo
Well, we’re doing a Samurai list, so why not start out with a game with Samurai in the title?
Samurai Warriors 5 is another in a long line of Musou titles, but this time around, there have been several improvements to make the game even better than the previous one. In fact, the gap between 4 and 5 was 7 years, so they had to be doing SOMETHING in that time, right?
You’ll play as a large group of samurai warriors (get it?) and have to use tactical yet action-packed gameplay to make it through the armies that await you.
With a deep story and fun combat, there’s a lot to enjoy here if you wish to give it a shot.
#11 Onimusha Warlords
PC | Xbox | PlayStation | Nintendo
The original Onimusha Warlords was an all-time classic when it first came out, and now, with its remaster you’re getting the best of both worlds as you’ll get the original game, but with improvements to the graphics and the gameplay!
This time, you’re playing with better precision than ever before, and will have to go through intense fights to survive the storyline that is still very much intact from the original title. As if that’s not enough, the soundtrack for the game has been improved to further add to the experience.
So if you haven’t played the original, and you want to see why so many hold this game in reverence, here you go!
#10 Katana Kami: A Way of the Samurai Story
PC | PlayStation | Nintendo
Katana Kami: A Way of the Samurai Story is a REALLY long name for a video game, but it also puts an interesting twist on the genre. Because in this title, you play as a swordsmith whose daughter has been taken as a way to force him to pay off his debts.
Now, you must make as many swords as possible to clear your ledger. But doing so isn’t that easy. You’ll make what you can by day, then at night, you must venture into the world at large to get materials and train your own fighting skills to ward off monsters and others who try and take what you have.
Become part of a faction, or tip the scales of power in a way that you want them to. Just remember, your daughter’s life is at stake!
#9 One Strike
PC | PlayStation | Nintendo
One Strike is honestly not too unlike Samurai Gunn 2 in its focus. Because this beautifully rendered pixel game puts you in 1-on-1 duels where you will have to land just one strike upon your opponent in order to get the victory.
In fact, things are so fast and furious that each match is said to take no longer than ten seconds most times. You’ll be able to use a variety of tactics to try and get your victory, but remember, you’ll need to think fast on it!
And even though you only have seconds in each fight, your characters are all deep, so choose the one that best suits you, and then go into battle to see if you can be the best samurai warrior ever!
#8 Samurai Bringer
Keeping on our “this is something different” path, we have Samurai Bringer. In this game, you play as the deity Susanoo, who after a losing battle is cast down to the mortal plane without his powers. Now, to defeat the 8-headed dragon who beat him before, he must go through hordes of samurai and demons to regain his power and get revenge.
One of the beautiful things about Samurai Bringer is that every single playthrough that you have is going to be different. The world will change every single time you play. Plus, you’ll be able to make your own combat style via various techniques and abilities that you learn over time. So if you don’t like one? Swap out and see if another works for you.
The possibilities are endless.
#7 Black and White Bushido
PC | Xbox | PlayStation | Nintendo
If you’re looking for a game that you can play with your friends at your house, then Black and White Bushido is for you. This game was built to be a kind of “couch co-op” game with a fun twist. In it, you’ll play as either white or black samurai, then be sent to a battlefield where you can actually hide in your respective colors.
You must use that to your advantage. Hide from sight so that you can sneak around, get items, and get the better of your opponents. Just remember, your opponents can do that to you as well. So go forth, and see who can be the best samurai, and who will be the last one standing!
#6 Warframe
PC | Xbox | PlayStation | Nintendo
In this next third-person shooter, you’ll play as a high-tech combat killing machine. Use your skills, weapons(Swords included) and advanced features to put any would-be challengers in their place. Warframe features customizable options and a lot of in-depth character progression. It’ll build you into a Ronin of the cosmos. Warframe delivers incredibly tight gameplay, sleek combat and immensely fluid movement. You’ll have the option to play through this stunning game alone or to take it on with your crew. It’s time to sow fear among any who think they might best you.
#5 Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Shredder’s Revenge
PC | Xbox | PlayStation | Nintendo
Samurai and ninjas go hand in hand and none are more iconic than THE Turtles! If you’re a fan of the TV show or Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Turtles in time the arcade or SNES games. Then you’ll love Shredder’s Revenge. This game is a beautiful homage to the prior beat ’em ups. It’s a love letter to not only the previous games but the shows and comics too. The gameplay is smooth and refined, multiple moves and characters ensure there’s enough variety.
Four-player co-op and six-player online multiplayer ensure that you can complete each stage with the whole team. There are several little Easter eggs and references to both the TV series and the prior games. So fans of the series will derive even greater enjoyment. Couple that with a story mode and arcade mode and you’re in for hours of fun!
#4 Katana Zero
Katana Zero is very easy to put into the top 5 because it’s meant to be played in various ways and enjoyed at breakneck speeds. In this game, you play as a person who is trying to uncover your past, and as you go through this neo-noir world, you’ll be able to do that as you blast through enemies at breakneck speeds.
But the best part is that you’ll be able to not just manipulate time to ensure you can keep going, but you’ll have plenty of methods in the world to take down your enemies. Do it fast, do it methodically, do it stealthily, it’s all up to you. And when you add all that to the game’s look and sound? You can see why so many are in love with this title.
#3 Samurai Shodown
PC | Xbox | PlayStation | Nintendo
Samurai Shodown was a classic game back in the day, and it was one of a few titles that truly tried to showcase the art of samurai duels. And now, the modern day version is here, and it’s just as good at doing what it was meant to do: make battles tense and fun.
You’ll play as a set of warriors with various backgrounds, then have to use your brain and your sword in order to achieve victory. Test yourself against the AI that can actually learn based on how you play, then, test your mettle against the online community in order to see who is the best samurai in history.
The combat and the looks all scream quality, so don’t be afraid to be up a sword and duel in this game.
#2 Ghostrunner
PC | Xbox | PlayStation | Nintendo
Going back to the more fast kind of combat, we have Ghostrunner. In it, you play as a futuristic blade fighter who is determined to get revenge on the person who rules with an iron fist: The Keymaster. The problem is that they are locked up in their tower, and the only way to get up there…is through their army of goons one floor at a time.
Ghostrunner dares you to go as fast as possible and to ensure you never get hit, because all it takes is one hit to die. But the twist is that you have plenty of abilities to help you survive. So use everything you have to take everyone out, and then when you get to the Keymaster…show no mercy.
#1 Samurai Jack Battle Through Time
PC | Xbox | PlayStation | Nintendo
Ok, I’m a little biased on this one because I like Samurai Jack a lot as a series. And Battle Through Time was a game that was made in part by the creator to help make this a true in-canon game that honored much of the series.
In it, right after Jack’s “final battle” with Aku, Jack goes through a portal to the past, but just before he gets there, Aku throws him into a special dimension. One where Jack must now relive his greatest fights, else die at the hands of Aku.
You’ll wield all sorts of weapons and upgrade Jack as his battles go on. Will you get him back to the past at last? Jump in and find out
