10 Most Absurdly Powerful Magic Spells In Video Games

March 16, 2021 by Kevin Thielenhaus

Break your favorite video games in two with these ridiculously OP magic spells.

The Ultimate Custom Spell [The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion]

If you want a game-breaking spell in Oblivion, you’ll have to make it yourself. By joining the Mages Guild, you’ll unlock a Spellmaking Altar. At these stations, you can create unique custom spells — and the best can be crafted once you reach 100 Destruction skill. That’s totally possible, even early in your Oblivion adventures.

With 100 Destruction, you can craft a spell to deal 100 Fire / Frost / Shock / Magic damage. That’s full damage per cast with all the elements — so every enemy is vulnerable. It costs a lot of MP, but what does it matter when enemies die so quickly to your attacks. You can always refill with a quick one-hour nap.

Counter + Mime [Final Fantasy 7]

By linking the Mime command to the Counter materia, characters in FF7 will automatically perform the action of a previous character when they’re attacked at no MP cost. Basically, if you have a character kitted with Counter + Mime, you can hit enemies with killer Summons and spells for free without even using your turn. This is especially useful when paired with OP end-game summons like Knights of the Round.

Mime is just an incredible powerful ability. With the Mime materia equipped, any character can select the Mime command on their turn. You can use costly MP attacks twice! Or thrice if you’ve got that Counter equipped and take a hit. All this nonsense is exclusive to the original PS1 version of FF7 so far — but maybe when Final Fantasy 7 Remake 2 comes out, we’ll see the return of this overpowered strategy.
