10 Most Absurdly Powerful Magic Spells In Video Games

March 16, 2021 by Kevin Thielenhaus

Break your favorite video games in two with these ridiculously OP magic spells.

Vanish + Doom [Final Fantasy 6]

An infamous trick from Final Fantasy 6 that still works with your Super Nintendo Classic mini-console. The Vanish spell, when used on enemies, removes certain magical immunities — including instant-death magic. Doom is a spell that has a very low chance of causing instant-death, and most bosses are straight-up immune.

See where this is going? You can remove immunity with Vanish, then use Doom to score an instant kill. And this works on almost every enemy and boss in Final Fantasy 6. It won’t work in the GBA re-released, but in any emulated versions like the Super Nintendo Classic pack-in, this trick works perfectly. Say goodbye to any challenge.

Alicia’s Resist Crossfire [Valkyria Chronicles]

This isn’t exactly a magic spell, because you can’t cast it on your own. Instead, Alicia’s “Resist Crossfire” power only appears when she’s getting shot at. That’s still a magic ability to me, so we’re adding it to this list — it’s also game-breakingly powerful.

Valkyria Chronicles is a turn-based strategy game that gives you direct control of your units. While you’re controlling a unit, other units on the field will stand still and open fire if they spot you. Avoiding incoming crossfire is normally a huge aspect of your strategy, because crossfire will chew your units up.

Unless they’re Alicia. Alicia is a special character — after taking too much crossfire, she’ll take a special ‘Valkyria’ form, followed by “Resist Crossfire”, which essentially makes her immune to crossfire damage. You never have to kill enemies in normal stages, too. Your goal is to reach the enemy’s flag and capture it. Under the right conditions, Alicia can complete missions in a single turn just by running into gunfire, taking damage, unleashing her latent invincibility, and just running straight to the enemy flag.
