The Airship [Chrono Trigger]
The prison escape in Chrono Trigger is what got us little kids hype. Even today, it’s an exciting sequence — as Chrono and the gang, you have to fight your way out of the prison and take on a giant mechanized boss blocking the bridge. And that isn’t the escape we’re talking about here. No, the real escape happens much later in the game when your time-bending team visits the floating continent of Zeal. After being captured by the treacherous Dalton, the party is imprisoned on a futuristic airship.
Why this escape instead of the other one? This one is way more involved. You have to sneak through the ducts, spying on Dalton and his guards all while searching for your lost equipment. Everyone’s equipment is held in different rooms, and navigating the complex web of ducts and rooms can be a tricky puzzle — especially when some of your characters don’t have their equipment. You’ll also acquire the game’s iconic flying time-travel device at the end of this sequence, making this one of the most triumphant moments of the game. Unlocking your airship is always an exciting time in any JRPG.
Finally! [Chronicles of Riddick: Escape From Butcher Bay]
The Chronicles of Riddick game is an entire FPS that’s just about escaping. From the very first moments of the game, you’re working on your escape plan — and it doesn’t take long to enact it. You’ll attempt a big escape multiple times throughout the story, and each time you fail our boy Riddick gets tossed into higher-and-higher security sections of the prison. First you get thrown into the underground mines, and finally you get stuck in a cryo-tube with only a scant few minutes per day for recreation, and no contact with any other human beings.
Solving the final step, you just have to wait until a second cryobox opens and stow yourself away inside. That’ll let you get back to the stacks without being knocking unconscious first. Then it’s a few kicks away from freedom — the Triple Max area actually has much lighter security than other sections of the prison, so grabbing a guard’s pistol is enough to fight your way out and reach the diabolical Warden’s office. All part of the plan when you’re an intergalactic space criminal.
Don’t let the system keep you down. We’re always looking for more prison breaks — as long as they aren’t literally from the Prison Break video game.
