Floaty Ladders Of Death
Ladders are going to be a problem until the end of time. They’re getting better in games — games like Alien: Isolation and Call of Duty lock you in so you can climb ladders safely — but that isn’t every game. Death Stranding keeps some of the danger of ladders, making them breakable under heavy weight, or if your placement isn’t exactly right it’ll slip out from under you.
But we’re not talking about okay ladders. We’re talking about the dark age of ladders. Half-Life, Doom 3, and tons of other FPS games of the past made ladders the most dangerous traversal method on the planet. Instead of climbing up / down ladders, you’d have to float — and hope you don’t slip off.
You Can’t Just Restart A Checkpoint
Even awesome games make this mistake. Platinum Games develop hardcore action titles that score every battle you’re in — sometimes you’ll mess up and want to try again for a better ranking. But Platinum makes simply reloading checkpoints impossible in lots of their games. You have to exit to the main menu, then continue instead of simply reloading from the pause screen.
Bayonetta and Wonderful 101 have this annoying oversight — which sucks, because both games are awesome, and I have a sick compulsion to earn Perfect Platinum rank on every enemy encounter. For plenty of games, this wouldn’t be an issue at all. Nobody needs to reload saves constantly in a Mario game. You’re not aiming for a high score and moment-by-moment perfection in Kirby. But when it comes to Platinum games? I’d like to give those encounters a second try ASAP.
Games are an endless series of tiny annoyances. We couldn’t fit all our complaints here on one list! Check back later and we might have more moaning to do.
