#4 Days Gone
Days Gone is a PlayStation 4 exclusive from SIE Bend Studio. The game follows a former bike gang member named Deacon in the post-apocalypse. After a zombie-like virus spread across the world, Deacon loses his wife amid the chaos while attempting to escape the flood of undead zombies. Since then Deacon has been living life with his best friend, taking on odd jobs for different factions in order to gain resources along with tweaks for his motorcycle.
However, his search continues in hopes to piece together the events that happened from when his last left his wife. With the world filled with undead, there’s always the need of a helping hand, though tackling some of these request jobs may prove to be difficult. One of the elements that makes Days Gone standout is the size of hordes that can be displayed in-game, making it impossible to take down an entire horde of zombies if you happen to come across one in the wild.
#3 Resident Evil HD Remastered
Resident Evil has been an inspiration for several video game titles and while there has been plenty of fans who have enjoyed the original game, there are still quite a few that have yet to experience it. After having plenty of success since it originally released, it came as a welcomed surprise when Capcom opted to bring out a remake for the Nintendo GameCube in 2002. That remake was the basis for the new HD remastered edition available on current-generation platforms. This is an old school survival horror video game experience and it may turn some potential players away.
In this game, players are following a special division of the police department tasked with going out to find another missing tasked force group. This search ultimately puts them into an old mansion where it’s clear some sort of experiment has gone wrong. Now the mansion is overrun with zombies leaving players to explore the complex home layout and find out what’s going on. As mentioned, this is still an old school survival horror video game which means outside of exploration, you’ll be solving puzzles and dealing with very limited resources. Don’t go in expecting to splatter zombie brains all over the place. Instead, you will need to be very cautious of your health, the amount of ammo you have and where certain areas are around the map.
#2 Resident Evil 2 Remake
We’ve had the original Resident Evil remake and even remastered editions but it took Capcom quite a few years to deliver a similar experience to Resident Evil 2. Resident Evil 2 Remake follows two protagonist, Leon Kennedy and Claire Redfield. Both happened to be heading into Raccoon City with Leon being a rookie cop starting his first day at the Raccoon Police Station while Claire had been on a quest to find her missing brother Chris Redfield. Things don’t start off well as their ride into town causes them to get split up after a herd of zombies comes barreling their way. Now trapped in Raccoon City, the duo is forced to fight their way through in hopes of finding a means of escape.
This game is very much similar to the original Resident Evil installment. Players will be exploring the area, finding clues, solving puzzles, and managing their inventory. It’s your typical old school survival horror experience and best of all, Resident Evil 2 Remake can be quite a lengthy game if you’re wanting something that will take you a little bit of time to complete. It’s worth pointing out that the title gives players the ability to play as either Leon or Claire. However, you will need to play both in order to get the full ending. There storylines are also different so while you may visit some of the same areas, it will be for different reasons or due to different characters you meet along the campaign.
#1 The Last of Us Remastered
The Last of Us from Naughty Dog grew such a massive following since it released on the PlayStation 3 that the studio was quick to deliver a remastered edition for the PlayStation 4 shortly afterwards. This game doesn’t technically involve zombies, but the virus is pretty much zombie-like, so please don’t bash me too hard for including this in the list. In this game, players take the role of a man named Joel who is trying to live his days doing odd jobs in an apocalyptic world. With much of the world in shambles, humanity has fled to sanctuary areas controlled by factions or government officials.
However, one day Joel is given a new job task which would require players transporting a young girl across the country. It’s a tough journey filled with ups and downs. There will be hostile groups of humans seeking resources you may have to a wide range of different creatures looking to further spread its infection. Still, it’s narrative-driven adventure with players fighting against impossible odds. Once this game comes to an end you’ll be eager to jump into the upcoming installment, The Last of Us Part 2.
