The Outer Worlds: How To Get SAM, The Robot Companion | ‘The Cleaning Machine’ Guide

October 28, 2019 by Kevin Thielenhaus

Unlock the last companion in The Outer Worlds. Here’s how to find his rare component and bring him back to life.

SAM the Cleaning Machine.

The trickiest companion to earn in The Outer Worlds is undoubtedly SAM. This derelict robot is broken and useless, and you’ll find him very early in the game — once you power on the busted Unreliable and begin your journey into the stars. If you want to fix him, you’ll need to locate a hard-to-find item. Here, we’re going to explain how to complete his quest ‘The Cleaning Machine’.

SAM is a helpful cleaner robot that spews deadly globs of acid from his nozzle. He has a focus on Science, Hacking, and Intimidate skills — so if you’re looking to improve your Science Weapon damage, he’s the best companion for the job. He’s also a big, burly robot and naturally resistant to most types of damage. Like a proper robot, SAM is incredibly friendly, and probably the weirdest of the six companions you can unlock. Learn exactly how to get him on your team below.

How To Get SAM, The Robot Companion | ‘The Cleaning Machine’ Guide
Land on Roseway and travel south to access the Storage Facility.

SAM is a friendly robot, disabled and locked in the third floor of the Unreliable. After powering up your ship, you can visit the robot and begin ‘The Cleaning Machine’ companion quest. To repair him, you need to find a special item called an Acid Steeper.

Talk to Gladys on the Groundbreaker, and she’ll make a new location available to you — Roseway on Terra 2. Travel to Roseway, and look for a large structure directly south of the Roseway Landing Pad.

The Acid Steeper is that green thing, found in the Storage Facility at the Roseway colony.

The Acid Steeper is located in the Auntie Cleo’s Storage Facility. You’ll need to get through the locked door on the first floor — it’s just to the left after passing through the door, on the large metal shelves.

Return the Acid Steeper to SAM, install it, and you’ll unlock SAM as your proper companion! He’s a burly robot that’s extremely tough and sprays acid all over your enemies. He’ll help you improve your Science, Hacking, and Intimidation skills.
