Control is a very different Remedy game. All the gunplay and environmental destruction is there, but you’ll find many more features floating under the paranormal surface. This is a complex and rewarding adventure if you dig deep into its many systems, and you’ll find some awesomely weird stuff if you take the time to search for it.
Basically, I’m saying that I’ve got 10 weird little tips you’ll probably want to know while you’re exploring the mysterious Oldest House. Whether it’s which powers to upgrade first, or where to find rare House Memories and what they do, there’s a lot of little bits of information you can easily ignore while playing the main story — and I recommend you stop and look around to get the most out of this totally mind-bending game.

#1: Upgrade Launch To Throw Around Unsuspecting Enemies
Upgrade the Grab ability early to unlock a useful skill — being able to throw enemies with low-health at other enemies. It costs less AP than other upgrades anyway. Only 2 AP per upgrade instead of 3 AP.
#2: Earn Extra Cash By Dismantling Useless Mods
Deconstruct doubles of Weapon / Personal mods for extra cash. You can use the currency to purchase new weapon configurations, or buy up randomly generated new mods at any CP.
#3: You Can Only Swap Costumes At One Particular Control Point
You can unlock secret costumes and swap them at the Central Executive CP. If you look around the environment very carefully, you’ll be able to find strange puzzles and Easter eggs — some of these, like a luck puzzle in the Luck & Probability department, give you new costumes.
#4: Explore Areas A Second Time To Yield Big Rewards
Return to areas you’ve already explored to unlock higher clearance kevel doors. The most important item you’ll find from these rooms are House Memories, an extremely rare material.
#5: Collect House Memories To Upgrade Astral Constructs Mods
Why do you want House Memories? These rare materials can be used at any CP to upgrade the level of Random Mods you can purchase. Upgrading your level increases the mods from Lvl. 1 to Lvl 2, then to Lvl. 3 and so on. The mods are random, but you can reroll the selection for a small cost.
#6: Blast The Three Red Spots To Clear Glowing Barriers
Sometimes, you’ll encounter strange red barriers. The game never explains how to clear these obstructions — you need to find the three bright red pixel-y spots and shoot them. Shatter all three, and the red barriers will be lifted. It might seem like you need a special power to break through, but you don’t.
#7: Grab Every Collectible You Can Find — Some Unlock Side-Quests
Collectibles aren’t just interesting tidbits of information, they’re also hiding side-quest clues. Maybe notes have puzzle solutions or other information you’ll need to progress — and the best collectibles will unlock Object of Power side-quests. Follow those immediately!
#8: Complete Side-Quests ASAP To Unlock New Powers
Objects of Power unlock optional abilities you absolutely don’t want to miss – and they can be upgraded. When you find a strange area — like the break room in the Janitor’s Office, or the Training Area in Central Maintenance, you’ll want to complete these challenges ASAP. You’ll get an entirely new power!
#9: You Only Have One Chance To Complete Board Missions
Special timed Board missions give you bonus rewards for completing. They’re totally optional, and if you die before completing them, you’ll fail. The mission will stop, and you won’t get a second chance. Don’t worry if you fail — just wait until another one pops up. They give lots of great rewards, so if you’re looking to unlock a new weapon, try farming these special quests.
#10: Save Janitor Side-Quests For Later
You’ll meet the extremely mysterious Janitor in the Maintenance Sector, and right from the beginning he starts giving you jobs. Unfortunately, you’ll have to wait before you can complete them all. Give it time, and revisit these quests later once you’ve completed a good chunk of the game.
