Dreams, the ambitious project by the same team that brought us Little Big Planet is finally unveiling a few of its secrets. As of 12/19/18, beta invites are being sent out to a select group as the closed beta begins. Next month marks the open beta, where everyone that hasn’t yet been invited will (likely) get a chance to jump into the open beta and begin fooling around with the game-making tools in Dreams.
After reading through a variety of sources, I’m going to explain what you need to know about the beta, how some were able to get into the closed beta, and how you might be able to secure a spot in the open beta available on January 4, 2019.
Before we get into the content, let’s talk briefly about Dreams — what is it? Well, Dreams is like Little Big Planet blown out to the third dimension. It will come included with several pre-made games, but the community will ultimately prove how great this game-development tool will be. Media Molecule, the developers, have suggested that you’ll be able to create a wide variety of game types, from adventure games to action-adventures. You’ll be able to create models, animate them, give them dialogue, and much more. It sounds like a dream come true for the creatives out there.
Dreams Beta | FAQ
Learn all about the Dreams beta — how to access it, when it begins, and how to sign-up, below.
When Does The Beta Start? When Does It End?
The closed beta begins 12/19/18. The open beta begins 1/4/19. The general beta period ends on 1/21/19 — so that’s a full month for the closed beta, and still a significant amount of time for the closed beta.
How Do I Get An Invite To The Closed Beta Or The Open Beta?
Closed Beta invites were sent out to anyone the subscribed to the Dreams Newsletter on-or-before December 7th. If you subscribed to their newsletter before or on that date, you’ll automatically get a beta invite sent to you.
- All beta applicants must be over 18 years of age, and they must live in the following regions: US, Canada, Australia, Europe, Middle East, or Africa.
The open beta will be available through sign-ups on January 4th, and invitations will be sent in waves from that date on. Media Molecule can’t guarantee you’ll get into the Open Beta if the sign-ups prove to be too popular.
How Do I Download The Dreams Beta?
The Dreams Beta will be available through the PSN store. After receiving an invite, follow the instructions to download the beta — it’s only about 4GB. The application should be called the ‘Dreams Creator Beta’.
What Is Included In The Dreams Beta?
The Dreams Beta is a very small, limited version of the main game. You’ll only have a select few sharing or connectivity features, but you’ll be able to play pre-loaded creations and tutorial lessons.
This Beta is focused on the creation aspect of the game, so you won’t see a lengthy game mode. You’ll be able to tinker with your own creations, or open up Media Molecule creations to edit or tinker with — looking at what other people create should give you a better idea of the possibilities in Dreams, right?
The Dreams Beta will not include VR Support. The main game will feature full VR Support, but the Beta sticks to just the Move Controllers and the standard PS4 controller.
What Else Do I Need To Know?
The beta requires prospective players to sign a non-disclosure agreement, so don’t expect to post your new creations on Twitter for all to see. Media Molecule has promised to open a forum for beta players to discuss the game and share their creations in private or give feedback to the developers.
The developers at Media Molecule have also promised to keep your creations. They should persist on the server when the main game releases — but you never know what might happen in a beta. A technical issue could take down everything.
Finally, you do not need a PS Plus subscription to play Dreams. You do need it to access some online features, but you’ll still be able to share and download other creations without a premium account.
