The 33 Best Multiplayer Video Games Of This Generation So Far

March 5, 2019 by Dennis Patrick

Enjoy some great multiplayer games for the PlayStation 4, Xbox One, PC, and Nintendo Switch platforms.

#20 Overcooked 2
  • Developer: Ghost Town Games
  • Publisher: Team17

Overcooked was a hit when it first launched into the market and now we have a sequel that released on the latest generation platforms this year. Essentially, the game builds on top of the original Overcooked video game but with brand new restaurants and recipes to finish while going through wacky levels.

#19 Far Cry 5
  • Developer: Ubisoft
  • Publisher: Ubisoft

The fifth main title within the franchise, Far Cry 5, takes place within the United States of America in a fictional Montana area known as Hope County.

Within the narrative, Far Cry 5 pins players against Joseph Seed, a leader of a cult who has forced his way into controlling Hope County. As more innocent civilians become trapped and forced into submission under Joseph Seed’s rule, only a handful of resistance stands in his way.

Just as before, players can expect the title to deliver as a first-person shooter in an open world environment which can be explored either on foot or through vehicles.

#18 Don’t Starve Together
  • Developer: Klei Entertainment
  • Publisher: 505 Games

Don’t Starve, developed by Klei Entertainment, originally released back in 2013 but Nintendo Switch users have received their copy this year. The game is an open world survival video game in which players must help keep their protagonist, scientist Wilson, alive from the dark world.

The game offers a day and night cycle in which the day portion puts players into collecting resources such as food and firewood while at night the game tosses monsters for players to avoid. This can be a difficult game for players to go through as well simply due to the fact that your world will be randomly generated and the included permanent death implementation.

Since its initial release, several editions and DLC has been released giving players even more content to go through such as Don’t Starve Together which brought in a multiplayer expansion.

#17 Grand Theft Auto Online
  • Developer: Rockstar North
  • Publisher: Rockstar Games

Grand Theft Auto V is a massive hit and it’s one game that despite being a number of years old now, the community is very much active. When the title first launched on last generation consoles, the game was the standard third-person open world experience filled with crime and chaos.

However, when it launched shortly after for the current generation of consoles, the development team over at Rockstar Games had tossed in a new element, the ability to go into a first-person perspective. This added a whole new element to the video game, but it’s not for everyone as the controls can feel a bit off in the first-person mode.

Within the game, players will be following three conmen who are after their own desires and each is playable freely making the game feel quite a bit bigger than previous title installments to the franchise. Furthermore, the online game community for Grand Theft Auto Online is extremely active and you won’t have any trouble finding players to enjoy the game with today. Whether that is gathering a crew to go out and complete online campaign missions, race against, or the random events that will occur, you’ll undoubtedly have plenty of chaotic fun.

#16 Fortnite
  • Developer: Epic Games
  • Publisher: Epic Games

Fortnite is developed between Epic Games and People Can Fly where players are tossed into a co-op sandbox world with a goal of surviving waves of undead hordes.

In the story, Fortnite unveils a tale in which most of the world’s population was suddenly taken away leaving the remaining few to deal with zombies that have dropped from the skies. Fornite really shines with its multiplayer as players will gather together to build up their fort.

Overall, your goal is to build up a base during the day and prepare for a long battle at night. However, most will find themselves going head-to-head where players attempt to be the last man standing in the popular battle royale mode.
