The Best Single Player Video Games Of This Generation So Far

August 5, 2020 by Dennis Patrick

Lose yourself in these incredible single player games for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, PC, and Nintendo Switch.

#45 Until Dawn
  • Developer: Supermassive Games
  • Publisher: Sony Computer Entertainment

Until Dawn is a PlayStation 4 exclusive and a horror adventure title. Developed by Supermassive Games, Until Dawn follows a group of eight characters who decide to hold a holiday retreat at a cabin within a fictional mountain resort in western Canada.

However, their holiday retreat quickly turns sour as they learn a psycho killer is on the loose forcing our group of eight to survive until sunrise. If you enjoy choice-based video games then this title will be a must play.

While this game centers around horror, there is a massive emphasis on choices. Much like Life is Strange, choices will make a difference throughout the narrative and in this particular, it may cost certain characters lives.

#44 Infamous Second Son
  • Developer: Sucker Punch Productions
  • Publisher: Sony Computer Entertainment

inFamous: Second Son is a game that deserves to be on this list for its faithful recreation of the city of Seattle and action packed combat. This is a thriving city with developers clearly taking note of the fine details to replicate the real world location.

Likewise, if you haven’t played the previous installments in the inFamous franchise then you’ll still be alright. This title takes place several years after the end of inFamous 2 with a brand new protagonist.

#43 Oxenfree
  • Developer: Night School Studio
  • Publisher: Night School Studio

Developed as their first debut title, Night School Studio released Oxenfree. This is a supernatural adventure video game that puts players into the role of a teenage girl named Alex. It’s within her weekend trip to a local island that events turn for worse leaving her and a group of friends stranded with a mysterious being.

Most of the game is revolved around choices when speaking to the other cast of characters while you explore the island in search for a means to escape. There will also be a few puzzles to solve as well, though the main center of focus is the story. Speaking of the story, the game will give players the ability to go back and replay the narrative a few times as there will be multiple endings available depending on the choices that you make.

#42 Far Cry 5
  • Developer: Ubisoft
  • Publisher: Ubisoft

The fifth main title within the franchise, Far Cry 5, takes place within the United States of America in a fictional Montana area known as Hope County.

Within the narrative, Far Cry 5 pins players against Joseph Seed, a leader of a cult who has forced his way into controlling Hope County. As more innocent civilians become trapped and forced into submission under Joseph Seed’s rule, only a handful of resistance stands in his way.

Just as before, players can expect the title to deliver as a first-person shooter in an open world environment which can be explored either on foot or through vehicles.

#41 Sunset Overdrive
  • Developer: Insomniac Games
  • Publisher: Microsoft Studios

Sunset Overdrive is a vibrant and colorful third-person action-adventure title. In the game, players are tossed into the not so distant future of 2027 where the world has become a dystopia in control by mutants. Within the game you take the role of a FizzCo employee who is tasked with cleaning up the mess in the city after the launch of a new energy drink developed by the mutants.

There is a big focus on speed and parkour movements as you battle against enemies while traversing the city. Currently there is no word of a sequel in the works. Instead, the developers have expressed an interest in crafting Sunset Overdrive 2 though they would require a new publisher.
