Obsidian Entertainment, the studio best known for their RPGs, has replaced their splash page with a mysterious new countdown that should have you speculating on exactly what it is they plan on revealing when the clock runs down.
Beneath the timer are the words: “What do the words mean?”
“Nothing. The Dirge of Eír Glanfath is sound without form, a lone voice crying out in mourning because it must.”
Further inspection on the page’s source reveals this bit of detail:
“To tenderness, fellowship. To fellowship, vigilance. So bring we all to the Night Market. I am the Spindle of Esenath. Know me by my light and stand with me in darkness.”
I should note that the logo of the timer is of an ouroboros—a snake eating its own tail. While the image is popular enough, the Wheel of Time series of novels by the late Robert Jordan used similar imagery on the book covers, albeit with a snake doing a figure eight around a wheel.
It’s known that the studio acquired the rights (Gamespot) to develop a Wheel of Time game way back in 2010. Nothing of the project has been mentioned since then, leading many to speculate that the game may no longer be in development.
It is more likely that the countdown refers to an all new IP by Square Enix and Obsidian Entertainment, as the Japanese publisher has been hinting about a project in the works called Project X at a western developer.
Besides whatever this game is, Obsidian Entertainment is currently working on the Southpark RPG and aiding with the development of Wasteland 2 for inXile.
I guess we’ll just have to wait and see.
