New web series Written By A Kid, owned by Felicia Day's web production company Geek & Sundry, has launched its debut. The show's format is simple: the creators sit down with a kid and listen to them tell whatever story springs from their young imagination. The story is simultaneouly depicted with a mix of animation and live-action as its being told.
The first episode features 5-year-old Brett, whose story, Scary Smash, features Dave Foley as an unfortunate milkman and Joss Whedon as Gerald, the head of a S.Q.U.A.T team (they're like a S.W.A.T team, except they're constantly squatting), charged with taking down a giant, unruly monster. The writer and director (Avengers, Buffy the Vampire Slayer), has no spoken lines, he clearly needs none to bring the heroic Gerald to life.
Director Daniel Strange says Whedon was not only enthusiastic about joining the project, but demanded to be treated just like all the other actors once he did. After viewing the rough cut that was sent to him, Whedon wrote back, "I'll do it on one condition. If [Kate Micucci] gets to do all her own squatting, so do I. 'Dem's my terms."
