A new developer diary for Dishonored 2 showcases some of the game’s themed missions. In the previous game, players simply had to assassinate targets and not do much else, but things won’t be the same this time around. Beyond that, most locations in the first game were simply different parts of the city of Dunwall.
In Dishonored 2, each mission will have its own theme. For instance, the Clockwork Mansion mission will have moving gears all over it, while another mission is set to have a time travel theme that sees you taking out multiple targets over the course of the mission.
“We wanted to do classic Dishonored missions where it’s a highly defended location, it has its own character, it has its own nature, and you’re going after a high-value target,” said creative director Harvey Smith.
“But we also wanted to give them some sort of epic theming, either fictionally or game-mechanically, so that it created a completely memorable space to move around in. Given that in one playthrough of Dishonored 2 you probably see 20% of the game, it feels to us like no two players will have exactly the same path.”
One such area is the Dust District, which has the player dealing with windstorms while having to decide to choose between taking out one of two possible targets. The windstorms obscure vision for both you and your enemies. Another mission, set in the Royal Conservatory, offers players a deeper look at the alt-Victorian world in which the game is set.
