The development team known as Happy Hobgoblin have flourished with the gaming community in their Square Enix Collective project Nyheim, to the point where they’ve recently gone forward with starting an Indiegogo campaign for the upcoming game. In short: it’s a survival based dice roller RPG.

The story of the world’s end in Nyheim starts in February 2015, when a rat in London contracts a virus that causes massive amounts of testosterone buildup and enhanced aggression (something akin to 28 Days Later). Within a month, it spreads to a significant portion of the rat population. Taking notice, pest control crews capture the rats for study. One of the workers is bit and obtains the illness. After that, the virus becomes airborne and spreads to central Europe, the United States, and China. The media catches on, causing people to panic which makes the disease propagate further. As all major cities start to become inflicted, the rat population evolves into more aggressive creatures. The death toll rises, with World governments eventually shutting down and the general infrastructure of society falling into tatters.
You take on the role of a survivor, who makes their way forward in this distorted and ruined new world. Rebuild the fictional Northern Eurpoean town of Nyheim with the remnants of society.
“As they already have with all Square Enix Collective-supported campaigns, our community has now also voted strongly in favour of a crowdfunding campaign for Nyheim”, said Phil Elliott of Square Enix Collective. “The gaming community’s commitment to Square Enix Collective has helped us to achieve 11 successful crowdfunding campaigns in a row. Nyheim will make a wonderful 12th addition to the increasingly diverse roster of Collective games”.
Nyheim is a single player dice-rolling video game, where your outcome is bound to four core attributes. Your Awareness, Endurance, Speed, and Wits are involved in every aspect of your actions and experiences, such as combat and skill progression. The survivor search party moves around Nyheim from place to place in order to scavenge for supplies, rest and heal up, or complete some other objective. You’ll balance that roaming party with your HQ, which becomes the foundation for your New World society. As time goes on, the rats will die out slowly. But it also means finding supplies out in the world is much harder.
Whenever you roll the dice, you have some degree of control over the basic luck of your results. You can use food for a reroll (but don’t run out of food, or else you’ll obviously starve), and there are items and skills that let you change your dice roll results or obtain extra rerolls that way.
Nyheim comes to Steam, GOG, and Itch.io in May 2017. But overall there are plans to bring the game to mobile devices, consoles, and VR, in addition to the PC release. Check out their website, Twitter, and Facebook for detailed information about the game’s development.
